Douglas holds on for victory

MINDEN — Back-to-back touchdown drives late in the second quarter provided an early lead and then some clutch defense in the fourth quarter Friday night enabled the Douglas High School football team to preserve a 14-12 Sierra League victory against Galena.

Douglas (1-1 league, 3-5 overall) held on to defeat Galena (0-1, 1-6) thanks to a goal line stop at the 1 and Trevor Tierney’s interception in the end zone on the potential game-tying 2-point conversion attempt with 1:35 left to play at Keith Roman Field.

One of the game’s pivotal moments came on the second play of the fourth quarter on fourth-and-goal at the 1 when Reagan Roberson and Andrew Jensen led a defensive surge that stopped Galena’s Grant Hooks for a 2-yard loss.

Douglas took the lead on a 16-play, 71-yard drive that culminated with a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bryce James on third down. The Tigers ran the ball on 15 of 16 plays during the drive. Cale Kynett had nine of those carries for 39 yards, including two key conversions, a 5-yard run on fourth-and-1 from the Douglas 38 and another 5-yard run on third-and-5 from Galena’s 13.

Douglas scored again on its next possession capped by Kaleb Foster’s 27-yard touchdown sweep around right end.

Galena scored with 5:41 to go on a 17-yard scoring pass from quarterback Sonny Robison to Jared Spotted Bear, however, the PAT kick attempt failed. The Grizzlies struck again late on a 58-yard scoring bomb from Robison to Alec Van Key, only to see their bid to tie the score ended by Tierney’s interception.
