Senator Square: Proficiency tests this week at Carson High School

Proficiency testing will take place this coming week at Carson High School. All juniors and seniors who have not yet passed their proficiencies will be testing from 7:45 to 10:20 a.m. Monday through Thursday. What this means for freshmen and sophomores and upper classmen who have passed their tests, is school begins on those day at 10:30 a.m. You will be required to present a picture ID or driver’s license to take the test. If you don’t have a picture ID see Mrs. Stephenson in the Athletic Office. It’s $5 to replace a lost ID.

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS

Coming up on Tuesday at the Carson City Community Center is the first instrumental concert. Come listen to the various bands perform a variety of music. Mariachi, jazz, orchestra and wind ensemble groups will all perform at 7 p.m. Contact band director Bill Zabelsky for more information at bzabelsky@carson.k12.nv.us.

Also coming up is the first choir concert performance on Wednesday at the Carson City Community Center. A variety of songs will be performed by the Concert, Chamber, Choir I & II groups, as well as both musical theater classes. A suggested donation of $4 admission fee will be charged that will go directly back to the choir department. CHOIR & ROTC HELP GRAND OPENING

The Carson Chamber Singers and CHS JROTC performed at the grand re-opening of Walmart on Friday at Topsy Lane. Walmart graciously gave each group a donation to the school’s programs.

HOSA FUNDRAISER

The Firkin & Fox restaurant will be hosting a fundraising night for the Carson High School HOSA — Future Health Professionals from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday. Just show your wait staff a flier, the Facebook event, or tell them you are there to support CHS HOSA and Firkin will donate a portion of the proceeds to the organization. Please enjoy an evening out and support the HOSA students as they raise funds to go to the state and national leadership conferences.

KEY CLUB INFO

Key Club will be busy volunteering at the Empire Elementary School this Thursday helping with the games at the annual Haunted House Trick or Treat night.

VOLLEYBALL NEWS

Volleyball will be hosting a Pinkies and Parents night on Thursday. Shirt sales and concession funds will be donated to Carson Tahoe Health Foundation for assistance for cancer patients. Please come out to watch some exciting volleyball and support a great cause.

GSA MEETING

The GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) Club will be having a meeting on Friday in Mrs. Golik’s room. Come check out our meeting. The GSA is a student-run club which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia.

FBLA & FFA FUNDRAISER

The Carson High Chapters of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Future Farmers of America (FFA) are currently selling bags of ground or whole bean coffee for $10 a bag. See a member of either clubs to make a purchase and help these clubs raise money for their state and national leadership conferences to take place later in the year.

Freshmen Parent Night: Freshmen please invite your parents to Freshmen Parent Night at 6 p.m. Monday in Carson High School’s Library. Counselors will present information about the Guidance Office, credits, graduation requirements, grades, transition class, 4 year plan, college requirements, and scholarships. University of Redlands visit: A representative from the University of Redlands will be visiting Carson High on Friday during AB55. This is a private liberal arts university in Southern California. If you’re interested in this type of school, please come by the Guidance Office to get a pass so you can join us.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s student of the week is Garrett Lawson. Garrett is our marching band’s drum major. He took the time over summer to attend a drum major leadership camp to conduct our band efficiently and effectively. Garrett also plays the horn and the trumpet for our band. You rock Garrett!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s spotlight is on senior Challen Wright. Challen currently has a 4.43 weighted grade-point average and has straight As in his challenging course load of advanced-placement and honors courses.

In addition to being an excellent student, Challen is also heavily involved in theater both at Carson High School and in the community. Challen has been a part of nearly every Carson High School production since his freshman year, including behind the scenes as the stage manager of the most recent play, “The House of Bernarda Alba.” He also performed in hilarious skits during Wednesday Night Live at the community center this past week.

Challen has played a role in several community productions as well, both on stage and backstage. You may have seen Challen perform in Les Miserables or most recently his lights and sound work on The Jungle Book through Wild Horse Theater.

Challen plans to major in neuroscience and it comes as no surprise Challen plans to pursue a minor in theater. Challen is applying to several colleges and wishes to attend either Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., or UNR. Carson High School is proud of Challen and wishes him luck in the future, both in and out of the spotlight.
