Community roundup: CMS runners place 2nd at TahNeva meet

The Carson Middle School eighth grade boys cross country team took second place at the TahNeva League Cross Country Championships contested Friday afternoon at Kahle Park in Stateline.

Fifteen Middle Schools from both Nevada and California participated in the event with more than 300 runners competing.

Brandon Copeland had a strong performance for Carson Middle, finishing the hilly 2.63 mile course in second place with a time of 18:18. Carson was only two points behind North Tahoe Middle School for the team championship.

The Carson boys seventh grade team came in third place. Parker Lehmann was the first finisher for the Solons. Lehmann and many of the top Carson finishers are in sixth grade. They will all be returning next year and should have a strong team in the seventh grade division.

On the girls’ side, Gabby Fernandez was the top Carson finisher, finishing sixth overall in the seventh grade division. Val Martinez was the first Carson finisher in the eighth grade division.

Warriors win title

The Nevada Warriors went 3-0 last weekend to win a youth baseball tournament in Dayton.

The Warriors beat the Reno Rattlers, 11-1; the Dayton Snipers 12-7; and Mammoth 14-5. The team is comprised of players from Carson, Reno, Gardnerville and Bishop.

Connor Culprit and Vernon Painter had two hits apiece in the first win. In the second game, Painter and Kahle Good each went 2-for-2. In the final game, Cal Omohundra, Good, Wyatt Simpson and Painter all had two hits.

CMS seventh graders win title

The Carson Middle seventh grade girls finished their basketball season undefeated after winning the TahNeva tournament recently. They won the last two games of the tournament by more than 20 points each.

The team was led by Lily Bouza (15 ppg), Lexi Philippi, Bella Kordonowy, and twin towers Gabby Frank, and Olivia Frank.

Mighty Mites win twice

The Carson City Pop Warner Mighty Mites beat Reno, 20-6, and the Sparks Cardinals, 39-6, last week. The team was forced to play on Wednesday and Saturday because of the recent fire/smoke which washed out a weekend of the schedule.

In the win over Reno last Wednesday, Keegan Ferris, Alex Myrehn and Jessie Delgado scored TDs for Carson. Zach Guthrie recovered a fumble, and David Smith, Alex Castillo, Eric Pool, Brandon Bradley and Nathan McKee led the defense.

Against Sparks, Delgado ran for two scores and threw a TD pass to Decarlo Quintana. Guthrie returned a punt for a score and Myrehn ran for a TD. Nick Coughran blocked well, while Danny Alvarado intercepted a pass and Miles Frewert recovered a fumble to lead the defense. Josh White and J.T. Heaton also played well defensively.

Tierney, Kaster triumph

John Tierney shot a net 64 and Bill Kaster had a net 67 to win their respective flights at the recent weekly Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club tournament.

Tierney won Flight A by two shots over Mike Rogers and three over Dahl Rask. Kaster won by three shots over Cleve Dalen and Walt Blizzard.

Sparman group wins at CVGC

Jack Sparman, Dan Essary, Charles Poe and Marc Prause shot a 126 to win the recent Carson Valley Golf Club event. The format was one gross and one net score per hole.

Gary Carsten, Jim Arena, Marc Menezes and Bob Pemberton were second at 134 and Bill Allen, Brick Ludington, David Morris and Roger Hala were third at 142.

Volleyball clubs now forming

Silver State Volleyball Club and Northern Nevada Junior Volleyball Club will be holding tryouts following the conclusion of the high school season.

Kolb shines for Tigersharks

Brett Kolb, 14, was the high point runner-up in his age group at last weekend’s King of the Hill Short Course Invitational at Carson Aquatic Center.

The Tigersharks had 41 swimmers at the event.

Kolb was second in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, third in the 200 breaststroke and 400 I.M., fourth in the 1000 free, fifth in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke, and sixth in the 50 free.

Ewan Kalley, Katarina Klatt, Talia Thornburg, Matteas Klatt, Hannah Presley, Camryn Aten, Robbie Daugherty, Nora Streng, America Brena and Bryan Remick were top three in their age group. Kalley won the 50 butterfly and was second in two other events. Presley, Daugherty and Brena each won the 1650 free in their age group.
