Prep roundup: Douglas girls soccer stays undefeated

MINDEN — Lexi von Schottenstein and McKenna Kynett scored two goals each for the Douglas girls soccer team Thursday in its Senior Night 5-0 victory against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (15-0 Sierra League, 20-0 overall) broke up a 1-0 struggle as it scored four goals during a 15 minute span to start the second half.

Von Schottenstein score goals in the second and 41st minutes while Kynett contributed 50th and 55th minute goals. Alissa Holley had a goal that made it 3-0 in the 48th minute.

Douglas clinched the league championship on Tuesday with a 5-2 win at Bishop Manogue.

STATE TENNIS

Douglas 10, Coronado 8

RENO — Douglas swept the final three sets of the match to pull out a come-from-behind 10-8 victory Thursday afternoon against Coronado (Henderson) in the first round of the NIAA Division I State Team Championships in Reno.

The doubles team of Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomroy defeated Coronado’s Camille Solla and Sam Ross 6-3 to clinch a victory at Caughlin Athletic Club that vaulted Douglas (13-2) into the state championship match for the first time ever. Ingrid Carlson and Tara Cottrill also won their third-round set against McKenna Curcaru and Morgan Mastromarina 6-0, while Madelyn Landerfelt bested Lauren Coons 6-1 to finish the match for Douglas.

Carlson and Cottrill also rallied to win six straight games to score a critical 7-5 victory against Coronado’s top doubles team of Nikoleta Nikoloff and Allie Doherty.

Coronado came in as the five-time Sunrise Region champion and Douglas as the No. 2 seed from the North.

Douglas faces undefeated Palo Verde in the championship match today at 9 a.m. at Caughlin. Palo Verde defeated Reno 17-1 Thursday in the other first-round match.

Landerfelt will also join Carlson and Cottrill to play at 3 p.m. in the first round of the state individual competition.

FOOTBALL

CHS Frosh 38, Galena 13

Abel Carter ran for four touchdowns as Carson’s freshmen improved to 4-2 and 2-0 in league.

Carter scored on a 10-yard run and Damian Wallace kicked the PAT to give Carson a 7-0 lead.

Galena responded by driving deep into Carson territory, but was stopped by Carson’s defensive stand. Carter then ran 90 yards for a score to make it 13-0. Carter’s 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter gave Carson a 19-0 lead.

Richard Romero later stripped the ball and ran 30 yards for a score to give Carson a 25-0 lead.

After Galena made it 25-7, Carter ran 70 yards for a score to make it 31-7.

Dawson Lamb’s 40-yard scoring run and Wallace’s PAT concluded the scoring.

Kyle Glanzmann and Landon Truesdale also had interceptions for Carson.
