Nevada Day revisited: 1959 & 1969

Carson City returned to normal today after the one-day celebration Saturday of the 95th anniversary of Nevada’s admission into the Union, which was stretched into two days by some of the celebrants.

For the most part it was an orderly celebration, but Carson City police booked in almost 100 persons who became too boisterous during the course of the day.

However, most of those booked were released with no charges filed. Only the more serious violators were held until formal charges could be filled before justice of peace Pete Supera today.

The largest crowd ever — just 548 less than the 50,000 mark — saw the Nevada Day parade here, according to Orvis Reil, chief planning survey engineer of the state highway department.

The parade itself, although as long in time as last year, had fewer participants, there being 1,944 persons involved this year compared to 2,299 last year.

The official list of parade winners announced by judges of the big event is as follows.

Special Award for Conformity with Parade Theme, “Nevada Sports and Recreation” — Nevada Sports and Touring Club; Carson Eagles Aerie; Stewart Indian School.

Service Club Entry — Carson Rotary; Carson City Lions; Sparks Soroptimists.

Old Fashioned Car Group — Horseless Carriage Club of Nevada.

Marching or Drill Unit, general — Kerak Temple Patrol; Kerak Temple Guard; Sea Cadets.

Old Time Horse Drawn Equipment — Midwest Livestock; Art Zweibel and Mrs. Andrew Sayre tied for second and third.

Modern Horse Drawn Equipment — Norman Brown.

Best Sustained Character — Sade Grant; Dorothy Whitney; Bowers Mansion restoration group and “Last Chance Joe” tied for third.

Community Entry — Carson City Chamber of Commerce; Carson City Lions Club and Sparks Soroptimists tied for second and third.

Commercial Entry — Harrah’s Club; James Canyon Ranch; Cottage Beauty Shop, Carson City.

Historical Float — Reno Gunfighters; Silver Queen; Virginia City.

Industrial Float — Kennecott Copper Corp.

General Float — Nevada Sports and Touring Association; Nevada Women’s Bell Club; Nevada Children’s Home.
