Ian Van Rensselaer had an outstanding effort for the Carson high boys cross country team on Friday in the Northern Division I League Meet.

Van Rensselaer finished fifth, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 11 seconds. Eveline Delgado also took fifth for Carson’s girls, finishing in 21:05.

The league meet was essentially a warm-up for the upcoming Northern Division I Regional Championships in which state berths will be on the line.

Both Carson’s boys and girls finished fourth in the league meet. The boys standings were: Galena 38, Douglas 41, Damonte Ranch 83 and Carson just behind in fourth with 88 points.

In the girls race, Galena won with 44 points and Douglas was second with 52. There was a three-team race for third between Damonte (79), Carson (88) and Manogue (91).

Other top finishers for Carson’s girls were: Shelby Brown, 12th, 22:28; Jiavanna Wong-Fortunato, 17th, 22:46; Rheanna Jackson, 19th, 22:49; and Athena Favero, 38th, 24:02.

Other top finishers for Carson’s boys were: Wyatt Cartier, 15th, 19:13; Miles Bean, 19th, 19:24; Daniel Jauregui, 25th, 19:47; and Kiefer Catron, 28th, 19:55.

“Ian and Eveline ran very well,” said Carson coach Pete Sinnott, who added Delgad was battling the flu. “Miles Bean had a great day moving up to third on the varsity boys team and Jia Wong Fortunato had a similar day moving up to third on the girls team.

“Both teams are in a good position for next week’s regional championships. If we can get everyone healthy, both teams have a shot.”

Sinnott also praised freshman Evan Allred, who moved up to race with the varsity on Friday. Carson’s girls were also without freshman Blanca Sosa, who was out with the flu.

BOYS SOCCER

Douglas 4, Damonte Ranch 1

Juan Aguayo scored two goals to put Douglas on track to a Senior Day victory at home against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (3-10-2 league, 7-11-2 overall) scored four goals in the 18 minutes before halftime — three of which came in the final three minutes — to erase a 1-0 deficit in a contest that figured prominently in the Sierra League playoff race.

Damonte Ranch (8-6), coming off a 2-1 win over Wooster on Tueday, began the day just four points behind third-place Carson (9-4-1) in the standings.

Aguayo, a sophomore defender, tied the score 1-1 in the 23rd minute, then scored the go-ahead goal when he pushed the ball into the net out of a scramble in front of the net with 2:36 showing on the clock.

The Tigers added two quick goals in the final two minutes to extend their lead to 4-1. Oliver Lopez took a short pass from Javier Vega to make it 3-1 and then Pedro Vega blasted in a 30-yarder, assisted by Lopez.

Sophomore goalkeeper Luke Heinrichs had six saves in the final 25 minutes of the second half, the last on a shot taken inside the 5-yard box, to help the Tigers preserve their win.
