SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City will never forget Pete Livermore

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: For the past week, we’ve all been saying what can be said about Pete Livermore, who died at the age of 73 on Monday. We’re saying that because so much could be said about Livermore. He did so much and meant so much to Carson City. And since one of the areas in which he did so much for Carson City came in youth sports, we have a suggestion: Name the Edmonds Sports Complex softball fields after Livermore. That would be appropriate since Livermore played such a huge role in the development of Edmonds Park. That’s just one idea, but soon let’s make sure at least some of our youth are playing at Pete Livermore Field or Fields somewhere in the community.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Nick Bowler, who’s well on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, for being invited to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico where he reached an elevation of 12,444 feet in his mountain climbing experience there.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Eddie Tierney, a Carson City Little League all-star, who took the initiative to present a letter to Gov. Brian Sandoval, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and Mayor Bob Crowell, requesting them to make an effort to bring the Mountain Ridge Little League all-stars to the Nevada Day Parade on Nov. 1 in honor of the state’s sesquicentennial. Mountain Ridge became the first Nevada team to qualify for the Little League World Series and advanced to the U.S. Championship Game in the process. Apparently, Mountain Ridge won’t be able to make it up here, but there’s still a week to go, so in the immortal words of Joaquin Andujar, “ju never know.”

SILVER DOLLAR: To Gardnerville’s Bill Paxson for winning more than $1 million, playing the Wheel of Fortune slot machine at Casino Fandango.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those honored at last week’s Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation awards ceremony at Mills Park.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Department of Transportation for maintaining the current Carson Street/U.S. 50 Junction exit in its freeway construction so travelers will continue to be able to head up to South Lake Tahoe without having to stop at a light. But...

WOODEN NICKEL: A wooden nickel goes to the Nevada Department of Transportation for even considering a light there. We could only imagine the nightmare that would have happened if drivers would have had to stop at a light before turning right on there way to Tahoe.
