Prep roundup: Carson runners set for regionals

For one of the few times this year, the Carson High girls cross country team is at full strength, and coach Pete Sinnott hopes the group is up to the task of finishing in the top three at today’s regional meet at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno at 10 a.m.

The top three teams in boys and girls in each division and the top five individuals not on advancing teams qualify for state on Nov. 8 in Las Vegas.

“We’ve had injuries, tests and illness,” Sinnott said. “It looks like everybody is ready to go. There are four teams ahead of us in both the boys and girls.”

According to Sinnott, Douglas, Reno and Galena are the top three girls teams. Douglas and Reno are strong on the girls side with Galena right up there. “The Douglas girls are fairly dominant,” Sinnott said. “Reno and Galena ran the same time last week. Reno has been coming on.”

If Carson fails to qualify as a team on the girls side, Sinnott said Eveline Delgado and Shelby Brown have the best chance to qualify individually. Rheanna Jackson, Athena Favero, Jia Wong-Fortunato, Alison Greene and Blanca Sosa comprise the Carson team. Sosa has only raced once or twice this year because of various ailments.

“Blanca was a very good runner in seventh grade,” Sinnott said. “She has trained well. If she runs well, we have a chance to move up a spot. Shelby has a definite chance to qualify.”

Delgado has placed high each of the last two years at Rancho San Rafael.

On the boys side, Ian Van Rensselaer has the best opportunity to move on as an individual. Joining him in the race are Daniel Jauregui, Wyatt Cartier, Kiefer Catron, Miles Been, Mike Leiken and Evan Allred.

“Ian has been strong all year,” Sinnott said. “He’s getting stronger and faster.

“I think Danny has a decent shot. He’s been training well all year.”

Dayton sweeps Fernley

DAYTON — The Dust Devils sewed up a playoff spot with a 25-6, 25-18 and 25-15 win over the Vaqueros.

Dayton finished in fourth place with a 10-6 record, one win ahead of South Tahoe.

Cheyanne Strong led the Dust Devils with 20 kills and five digs, while Kaylee Turner had 10 kills, three digs and an ace. McKenna Olsen contributed eight kills and setter Shalia Powell finished with 29 assists, three kills, three digs and two aces. Elvia Diaz had eight digs, and Kati Turner and Kallie Strong had three digs apiece. Dayton will play Elko on Nov. 8 in the 1A playoffs.

Yerington dominates Smith Valley

SMITH — The Lions concluded the regular season at 32-2 after a 25-11, 25-10 and 25-8 win over Smith Valley Thursday night.

Kassidy Lommori had 14 kills, six digs and three blocks, and Chloe Dane had 12 kills, six digs, two blocks and four aces. Setter Ashley Rife contributed 23 assists, four kills, five digs, two blocks and four aces. Jordan Bobrick had 10 digs and Brianna Ramirez added five.

Virginia City wins in 4

ZEPHYR COVE — Niki D’Agostino had a triple-double to lead Virginia City to a 22-25, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-18 win on Thursday night.

Virginia City improved to 14-2 and 22-4. The Muckers play the No. 3 seed in the East in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs in Elko on Nov. 7.

D’Agostino had 12 aces, 10 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Bethany Fuller had 17 digs, five kills, two blocks and two aces, Nicole Huffman finished with 17 assists and four kills, and Gwyn Landaburu had eight digs and seven kills.
