Carson by night: When the mantle of night has enveloped the earth and hands have finished their labors, each saloon and store is full of chatting, happy people. Carson presents a lively appearance. Later the iron doors of the business houses are closed, the noisy tread of hurried feet no longer is heard. The city is hushed and quiet and the twinkling stars shine out and the silvery moon appears in the east. It is then in the “wee hours” of the morning that the steam press of the Appeal impresses upon the paper the news of the day and the thoughts of the writer.

Pioneer newswoman: Mrs. Sylvia Mighels Davis came to Nevada two years after statehood and has lived here ever since. She celebrated her 100th birthday. She is the widow of the late H. R. Mighels who established the Carson City Daily Appeal a year before their marriage in 1866. Mrs. Davis is a pioneer newspaper woman not only in Nevada but one of the first women in the nation to undertake such work ...

Photo caption: Explains new device — Dr. William King lectured the nursing staff of Carson-Tahoe Hospital on the use of the Bennett Valve, a breathing device, donated recently by the Women’s Auxiliary. The machine was the most recent of a number of pieces of equipment the Auxiliary donated this year including an incubator, a microtome, an isotope laboratory and an anesthesia machine and stand.
