Orchestra seeks video submissions

The Reno Philharmonic seeks video submissions of “Home Means Nevada” performances from schools and music groups across the state to include as part of a video montage during its Classix Two concert, a Nevada 150 event.

David Bugli’s arrangement of “Home Means Nevada” was commissioned by the Reno Philharmonic and made possible through a grant from the E. L. Wiegand Foundation.

The Reno Philharmonic recorded several versions of the Bugli arrangement and made available the sheet music and individual components to all Nevada music instructors to download and teach students.

The Reno Philharmonic encourages all schools and music groups across the state to record and submit a video of its performance of Bugli’s “Home Means Nevada” from the versions available on the group’s website. Submissions can be sent via email to Amy Heald at aheald@renophil.com, or via a YouTube link. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 1.

McDonald’s offers free breakfast to students

McDonald’s restaurants in northern California and Nevada will offer free breakfast to students in kindergarten through eighth grade from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Students younger than 13 are required to be accompanied by an adult.

The breakfast offers an Egg White Delight McMuffin, apple slices and one-percent low-fat milk.

Super full moon hike is Monday

Nevada State Parks is sponsoring a super full moon hike offering history of Washoe Valley from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Washoe Lake State Park.

The hike is described as easy, and is one-mile round-trip to a gazebo on the Deadman’s Creek Trail. The moon will be at its closest point to Earth, which is known as a super full moon.

Hikers will meet at the overflow parking area. Participants are asked to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring water and a flashlight. Dogs are not allowed. The program is free, but there’s a $7 per vehicle entrance fee, and Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.

Array of events set this month at museum

Following is a schedule of events happening this month at Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.

Wilderness ranger activities, including how to set up a tent and information about leave no trace, animals, outdoor safety and navigating with a compass, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13. Tickets are available starting at 9 a.m. at the event, which offers 30-minute stations for all ages.

The museum’s first week of its fall volunteer tour guide training will have an emphasis on John C. Fremont’s third expedition, the Lincoln Highway, Carson City Mint, Winnemucca Lake petroglyphs and more from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope set

The eighth Annual Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope, an event to remember those who took their own lives and raise awareness about the effects suicide have on communities, will take place on Sept. 13 in many different communities across the nation and in 12 communities in Nevada.

Dayton’s event will start at 10 a.m. at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., with registration, information booths and light breakfast snacks. Peggy Edwards will provide a keynote address, followed by the walk through Old Town Dayton. After the walk, participants are invited to plant flowers in memory of loved ones and in hope of the future.

Under Western Skies dinner set

On Sept. 13, the nonprofit Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch will present a day of music, art and Americana to raise operating funds for the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden.

The main event is a reservations-only gala dinner, Under Western Skies, featuring McAvoy Layne as the ghost of Mark Twain, at 5:30 p.m. Layne portrayed the author in A&E’s biographical piece and also in the Discovery Channel’s Cronkite Award-winning documentary “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

Artists Teri Sweeney and Charles Muench will display their work inside the Dangberg ranch house during the dinner. Twenty percent of all art sales will be donated to the Friends of Dangberg.

The artists’ paintings will be displayed from 9 a.m. to noon. Milton Merlos, a Spanish Flamenco guitarist, will play from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in front of the Dangberg ranch house.

Admission to the morning events is $5 for adults and free for 16 and younger and for members of the Friends of Dangberg. Reservations are not needed for the morning event, and champagne mimosas, wine and soft drinks will be available at a no-host bar.

Courses about mental illness offered

National Alliance on Mental Illness Western Nevada will offer a free Family to Family mental health education course from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 16 through Oct. 28 at Genoa Volunteer Fire Station, 2298 Main St.

The course is geared for family members of adults living with mental illness and is taught by trained teachers who have experience in supporting a loved one with mental illness.

National Alliance on Mental Illness Basics, a free six-week course for parents and caregivers of children or adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 23 through Oct. 28 at Carson City Fire Station No. 51.

Fernley Republican Women meet Sept. 16

A forum featuring Margaret Borso and Roy Edgington, Jr., Republican candidates for Fernley’s mayor, and Stan Lau and Kasey Sorriano, candidates for Fernley’s City Council, Ward 3, will be at the Fernley Republican Women’s next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A.

Flu vaccinations offered Sept. 20 in Dayton

Carson City Health and Human Services will hold a flu shot clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Sutro Elementary School, 190 Dayton Village Parkway in Dayton.

The clinic will take place in conjunction with the food distribution Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry conducts monthly at the school.

Carson artist features in Las Vegas

Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas is hosting “WAVES: 1998 - Continuing,” a contemporary drawing series by Carson City artist Galen Brown.

The exhibit is a response to Brown’s experiences growing up and living in the Lake Tahoe area. It explores objects that carry or trigger one’s memories and has been in progress since 1998.

The display is the newest exhibit in Nevada Humanities’ bi-monthly exhibition series, which showcases the work of Nevada artists, writers, photographers, and other creative thinkers.

Workshop on healthy soils slated

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute will offer a workshop about building healthy soils from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at WNC’s Carson City campus.

The workshop costs $25 by Sept. 15 and $35 after. The price includes lunch, a classroom lecture and tour of Holley Family Farms in Dayton.

The session will cover principles of soil health, including crop rotations, cover crops and minimizing disturbance, and the challenges of implementing soil health principles in Nevada. Ben Bowell, an organic education specialist for Oregon Tilth, and Albert Mulder, the state agronomist for USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services, will talk about cover crop species and their diverse uses and will suggest technical and financial support available to farms to sustain soil health.

Lessons offered at monthly dance party

High Sierra Swing Dance Club will present its monthly dance party at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St.

SolidWorks drafting classes slated at WNC

Western Nevada College Professional Skills Program will offer Beginning SolidWorks, Level 1, solid modeling CAD software this fall at the Carson City campus.

Experienced professional Bill Perez will lead students through the basics of SolidWorks. Classes meet in a lab setting with a workstation available to each student.

Classes will be from 7 to 9:45 p.m. Thursday from Oct. 16 to Dec. 18. The cost is $199. Students are responsible for obtaining the required textbook.

The 3-D drafting application is used in a wide range of industries for engineering design, documentation and simulation. The college plans to offer a Level 2 class during the spring semester.
