Senator Square: Car washes planned as fundraisers for Carson High clubs

Carson High School HOSA students will host a car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of CHS on Saturday. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student. The cost will go up to $5 the day of the car wash. All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to state and national conferences to compete and represent Carson City.

Last year, 41 students attended the state competition, 22 qualified for the national competition and 12 of those attended (one of the largest groups from the state)! The club will also accept any donated rummage sale items. Just bring them to the school on Saturday morning.

BUSINESS PROGRAM THANKS

Greater Nevada Credit Union and the Adams Hub have partnered with the Carson High School Business Program to provide cash awards to the best business plans presented by Carson High business students this year. Carson High business students develop and present business plans for their final exam spring semester. Community business people as well as college and high school faculty act as sharks in the spirit of “Shark Tank” to evaluate the students business plans.

SOCCER FUNDRAISER

The JV and varsity girls soccer teams will hold a car wash from 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Walgreens on Saliman Road. Tickets can be purchased from any soccer player for $5. Donations will be accepted the day of the car wash as well.

WELLNESS COUNCIL

The Carson High School wellness council meets once a month in Penny’s Cafe to discuss CHS’s compliance with the school wellness policy. This includes before and after school physical activities, staff wellness, physical education, health education, school meals, competitive food and beverage, school policies, etc. The committee members include a physical education teacher, health teacher, school nurse, school nutrition personnel, administrator, parent, student and any other staff interested.

We are hopefully going to include a school board member this coming year. It’s an exciting time as the State’s Wellness Policy was recently revised.

One of the changes required by the state policy is as of this coming year every school in the district is required to have a school wellness council and report for the district and to the USDA.

FBLA MEETING

The first meeting of Future Business Leaders of America will be held on Tuesday in room 250. Club activities, description of competitions for the year, as well as the Stock Market Challenge Game will be discussed. All CHS students are welcome to attend.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Each week a student is nominated by a team of teachers for their contributions to Carson High School. The student of the week honors can go to any grade level student. This week’s student of the week is Eric Cummings. Eric is a senior at Carson High. He’s a hard worker and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Eric always gives his best effort in everything he does and we are grateful for everything he has done here at CHS.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the Senior Spotlight shines on Joana Peraza. Joana has a 4.43 weighted grade-point average with straight As in her senior course load filled with honors and advanced placement courses.

No stranger to the spotlight, Joana has been an integral part of the theater program during her four years at Carson High School. In fact, her senior project this year is working on the fall production of “The House of Bernarda Alva.” As the dramaturge of the play, it’s her job to know the show inside and out in order to assist the actors with characterization and the director with production. In addition to this significant task, she’s also one of the stars of the show.

Joana is also involved in the National Honor Society and Key Club at Carson High School, dedicating much of her time to volunteering for different events. Joana gave her time this summer as a volunteer for the summer reading program at the Carson City Library. Joana plans to go to UNR or an out-of-state college where she will study English, Spanish or history. She would like to be a high school teacher.

For those interested in seeing “The House of Bernarda Alva,” the show will begin during the first week of October. Thanks Joana for your many and diverse contributions to CHS.
