Essay contest asks what liberty means

The Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees is sponsoring the 13th annual American Citizen Essay Contest

Trustees, during Tuesday’s meeting, decided on the topic:

“The Land of Liberty: What it means to me.”

“Maybe that’s time for that to be addressed in the world today,” said Ron Swirczek, vice president of the Carson City School District.

The essay contest began in 2002 to support patriotism in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Any public, charter, private or home-schooled student in Carson City may participate in this contest.

The essay should be no longer than five pages and may be as short as the student desires. The essay may be handwritten or typed.

The first page of the essay must identify the name of the student, age, school, telephone number and address.

Completed essays are due to the Carson City School District office, 1402 W. King St., no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 3.

The winners for each level — elementary school, middle school and high school — will receive the following cash prizes: first place, $80; second place, $30; and third place, $15.

Essays will be judged within each grade level for adherence to topic, quality of writing and originality of thought.

Winners will be announced at the Nov. 25 school board meeting.

Also at the Carson City School Board Meeting:

• Parent meetings to discuss the distribution of mobile devices to third through fifth-graders will be 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at Fremont Elementary School; 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at Fritsch Elementary School; and 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Mark Twain Elementary School. The remaining meetings will be announced later.
