Prep roundup: Reed ties Carson girls soccer, 0-0

SPARKS — Carson High and Reed battled to a scoreless tie in a Division 1 girls crossover soccer match Tuesday night.

Carson is 1-0-1 heading into Saturday’s home showdown against Spanish Springs at 1 p.m.

“We played well,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said, adding that he felt his team should have won. “Our defense played very well. We had good ball movement and created some good scoring opportunities. We just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Lindy Lehman and Bailie Zuber played well on defense, and Julie Torres was solid in the midfield in her first game of the season. Chantal Torres had one of the better scoring opportunities for the Senators.

Douglas blanks McQueen

MINDEN — McKenna Kynett scored five goals and assisted on another to help spark undefeated Douglas shut out McQueen, 9-0, in its season home opener.

Kynett scored three times in the first half to help stake Douglas (2-0 league, 5-0 overall) to a 4-0 lead at the intermission. The junior forward added two more goals in the opening 17 minutes of the second half, aided by assists from Alissa Holley and Lexi Von Schottenstein.

Emily Lawrence, Silvia Fernstrom, Megan Sheets and Sam Crawford accounted for the other Douglas goals. Holley had two assists on the day.

Corryne Millett was credited with her second straight shutout.

Fernley edges Dayton

FERNLEY — The Dust Devils yielded a goal in the first half and never recovered in its 1-0 Northern Division 1 loss Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton fell to 1-1 overall heading into Thursday’s match at Truckee.

“We had four really good opportunities,” Dayton coach Jared Miklich said. “One went off the post and another was headed to the upper corner and their goalie made a nice play on it. We had a couple other chances.”

Miklich praised the play of defender Briseida Lozano and midfielder Claire Holloway. Goalie Kristina Mason recorded five saves.

Fernley handles Dayton

FERNLEY — Dayton scored 10 minutes into the contest to tie the game at 1, but the Vaqueros scored seven unanswered goals to grab an 8-1 win on Tuesday night.

Jaime Avila, off an assist by Marco Torres, scored Dayton’s lone goal.

“Fernley has improved quite a bit from last year,” said Dayton coach Vismar Rivas. “They have a lot of players back, and we’re a young team with a lot of freshmen and sophomores. We’re starting all over again.”

Dayton visits Truckee on Thursday.

Truckee sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — The Wolverines survived three tough sets against the Dust Devils en route to a 25-19, 25-20 and 25-20 Northern Division 1A victory Tuesday night.

Dayton, 0-1 in league play, hosts Lowry at 6 p.m. Friday.

“We were sluggish,” Dayton coach Mike Edmiston said. “Looking at the stats, it was our inability to put the ball down. They are a good team, but we’re not hitting the ball well.

“Shalia (Powell) only had 18 assists. They had some tall girls up front, but they weren’t any bigger than us. It was pretty even across the front at the net.”

Cheyanne Strong finished with four kills and five digs, Kaylee Turner had five kills, two blocks and three aces, and Rachel Hadley had four kills and six digs. Libero Elvia Diaz finished with nine kills.

Dayton had just service aces.

“We served a lot better at the (Yerington) tournament,” Edmiston said. “Truckee served a lot more aggressively.”

Yerington sweeps Fernley

YERINGTON — The Lions rolled past Fernley 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14 Tuesday night.

Kassidy Lommori had 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Chloe Dane added four kills and four digs, and Ashley Rife added 17 assists.

VC wins in three

SPARKS — Niki D’Agostino had 13 aces, nine kills and eight digs to lead Virginia City to a 25-16, 25-6 and 25-8 win over Excel Christian on Tuesday.

Nicole Huffman added 15 assists, six kills, five digs and three aces. Bethany Fuller added four digs and four kills. Chloe Branson added four digs.
