Carson’s offense comes alive in romp

After two scoreless draws, the Carson High girls soccer team decided enough was enough.

The Senators scored seven goals in the second half en route to an easy 9-0 win over Hug in a Northern Division I crossover match Tuesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The loss upped Carson’s record to 2-0-2 entering Saturday’s home match against North Valleys at 1 p.m.

“We started with Reno, Reed and Spanish Springs, three tough teams,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “:We shut them down (2-0, 0-0, 0-0). We wanted to get our offense rolling, and we were finally able to.

“We got rolling and then went flat.”

Chantal Torres scored four goals, Mayra Oliveras added two and Melissa Glanzmann and Karla Reyes added one each. CHS was also the recipient of an own goal.

In JV action, Carson rolled to a 7-0 win. Mallory Otto led the way with three goals, while Sophia Ruedy added two. Myra Torres and Molly Otto added a goal. Brynn Lehman had two assists.

Douglas 7, Reed 0

Alexis von Schottenstein’s fast break goal off the opening kickoff on Tuesday gave Douglas a lead it never relinquished at home against Reed.

Alissa Holley and von Schottenstein scored two goals each in the first half to help Douglas (4-0 league, 7-0 overall) take command in a matchup between perennial playoff contenders. Reed dropped to 0-2-2 for the season.

It only took the Tigers 10 seconds to jump out to an early lead as McKenna Kynett fed a pass to von Schottenstein, who scored the first of her three goals on the day.

Corryne Millett earned credit for another shutout for the Tigers, who have only allowed one goal through seven games.

South Tahoe 10, Dayton 0

Despite the lopsided to another powerful team in South Tahoe, Dayton coach Jared Miklich said his team continues to improve. “I’m just real happy with my team,” he said. “It was a tough game. I’m happy with the way they’re playing.”

TENNIS

Carson tops Reed

Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury went 3-0 to lead Carson to an 11-7 Northern Division I win on Tuesday afternoon at Carson High. The duo lost just two games in three sets. Jake Jones (6-2, 6-3) and Taylor Saarem (6-3, 6-0) went 2-0 in singles, and Nick Rosen won his only singles match, 6-4, for his first varsity win. Jayson Artz and Nico Salm went 2-0, winning 6-4 and 6-1. Jared Hearn and Trevor Sollberger went 1-1.

• The girls match at Reed was postponed because of poor air quality due to the King fire in California.

VOLLEYBALL

Virginia City sweeps Coleville

COLEVILLE — The Lady Muckers rolled to a 25-20, 25-11 and 25-16 win over Coleville Tuesday in a Division IV match.

VC improved to 2-0 in league and 8-2 overall.

Bethany Fuller had 10 kills and seven aces, while Nicole Huffman added two digs, 18 assists and four kills. Gwyn Landaburu finished with four kills and 11 digs, and Niki D’Agostino had four aces, four kills, two blocks and eight digs.

South Tahoe edges Dayton in 5

DAYTON — South Tahoe pulled out a 15-7 win in the fifth and deciding set Tuesday night in a Northern Division I match.

Dayton won the first and third games, 26-24 and 25-13. The Vikings won the second and fourth games 27-25 and 25-13.

The loss dropped Dayton to 0-3 in league.

The Devils played the fifth game without hitter Cheyanne Strong, who injured her ankle at the end of the fourth set. She still finished with 10 kills.

Shalia Powell had 16 assists and four aces, Kalee Turner had five kills, two blocks and three aces, Rachel Hadley finished with six kills and Elvia Diaz had six digs.

Dayton travels to Spring Creek (Friday) and Elko (on Saturday).

GOLF

Carson girls take fifth

RENO — Because of air quality concerns, the weekly Sierra League Invitational at Arrowcreek was shortened to nine holes. Carson finished fifth with a 222, well behind Bishop Manogue (172), Galena (196), Wooster (210) and Douglas (216).

Taylor Krupp finished 10th overall with a 50. Bethany Kniffen had a 58, Camryn Aten 54 and Angelika Liweg had a 60.

“The wins was blowing hard and some of the greens were nearly unputtable,” Carson coach Rod Butler said. “There were a number of 4-putts by all the teams.”
