Chandler’s fruit wagon. The wagon attempted to take the track from the locomotive engine I. E. James. The cowcatcher caught the wagon just above the center of the hind wheels, broke the wagon and distributed the fruit.

Wayside notes: The body of a noted horse thief and rustler known as Black Pete was found below the lava beds below Cabello. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of “Killed by thunderbolt from heaven.”

Centennial decorations: The first decorations appeared in Carson City when six colorful cross street banners were hung in the downtown area. Early in October the full length of Carson Street will have banners flying, centering the string a blue and silver flag bearing the state seal with banners of red, white and blue on either side. Dedication: The new Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Center for Advanced Media Studies was dedicated. The new school is named after Donrey Media founder, Donald W. Reynolds. Reynolds started his career selling newspapers on the streets of Oklahoma.
Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
