Prep roundup: Dayton girls soccer blanked in Elko

Dayton holds its own in defeats against Elko and Spring Creek

ELKO — Dayton High’s girls soccer team played well against Elko and Spring Creek this weekend, but dropped two Northern Division 1A games.

On Friday, Elko knocked off Dayton, 2-0, and on Saturday, Spring Creek shut out the Dust Devils, 4-0.

Offense continues to be a problem for the young Dust Devils, who start a plethora of underclassmen.

“We had a few chances this weekend,” said Dayton coach Jared Miklich. “We have not generated much offense this year.

“On Friday it was 0-0 until the 72nd minute, and they scored twice in the last eight minutes. Today we didn’t play as well as we did Friday, but we still did a good job. Spring Creek was a lot quicker than we were.”

The Spartans led Dayton 1-0 at the half, and scored three times in the final 40 minutes.

Dayton boys pounded by Elko, SC

ELKO — The Dust Devils were knocked off, 10-1, by Elko Friday night in 1A boys soccer.

Victor Gomez, off an assist by Marco Torres, scored Dayton’s only goal.

Dayton lost to Spring Creek on Saturday, 9-1. No other information was available.

Elko 3, Dayton 0

ELKO — A powerful Elko team beat a Dayton team without its top offensive weapon, Cheyanne Strong, 25-10, 25-13, 25-6.

Even though his team played without the injured Strong (bad ankle), Dayton coach Mike Edmiston said nothing should be taken away from Elko’s effort.

Shalia Powell had nine assists, Rachel Hadley had six kills and two digs, Kaylee Turner had two kills and Elvia Diaz added four digs for Dayton.
