Prep roundup: Dayton, Carson post big v-ball wins

DAYTON — Dayton High’s volleyball team topped Fallon, 3-1, in a Northern Division 1A match Thursday night.

Dayton won the first two sets by identical 25-19 scores, lost the third set 23-25 and pounded the Greenwave 25-13 in the fourth set.

Dayton is 2-3 in league play, and returns to action next Friday against Fernley.

“We played really well as a team,” Dayton coach Mike Edmiston said. “They didn’t let anything get to them like they have in the past.

“Cheyanne (Strong) played full time tonight, and her serving (four aces) really made a difference. She had a good amount of kills (12), but her serves had them back on their heels.”

Strong also contributed seven digs. Rachel Hadley had a team-high 10 kills and nine digs. Kaylee Turner had seven kills and two blocks and Kassie Strong had four kills and a block. Shalia Powell had 34 assists, three kills, two aces and three digs, and Elvia Diaz had 11 digs.

Carson rallies for victory

RENO — The Senators spotted McQueen a two-set lead and then roared back for three straight wins in the Division I crossover match Thursday night.

McQueen won 25-10 and 25-21, and then Carson won 25-17, 25-15 and 15-12.

“Our passing was off and the tempo wasn’t there the first two games,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “We slowed the tempo down and went to the high outside ball (to spike) and away we went.”

Maw credited a lot of the team’s success to Sarah Christl, who replaced starting setter Natalie Anderson, and finished with 37 assists and seven digs.

“Sarah did a great job taking over ownership of the team and keeping the team together,” Maw said.

Jaycie Roberts also played well, getting 19 kills, seven digs, 1.5 blocks and an ace. Juliana Anderson finished with 13 kills and three digs, and Kylie Riske had six kills and 2.5 blocks. Keelin Pilgrim added three aces, a kill, a block and a dig. Maddie Jergensen finished with seven kills, four blocks, five digs and two aces in what might have been her best all-around game of the season.

Carson returns to action next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Damonte Ranch.

CROSS COUNTRY

Strickler 6th at Fernley

FERNLEY — Freshman Sydney Strickler captured sixth place out of 46 runners to lead Dayton at the weekly Northern Division 1A meet.

“She’s been my only girl racing the last two weeks and I am glad to have her,” said coach Shawn Anderson. ”She is only going to get better.”

In the boys race, Brady Heusser was Dayton’s top finisher for the first time this season. He came in ninth overall, clocking a 19:31 in the 5K race. He was followed by J.J. Ply in 12th place (19:45) and Oakley Workman in 18th place (20:27). Nick Langstaff, running his second race since coming off an injured knee, was Dayton’s fourth finisher in 25th place (21:13) and Jared Logan finished in 26th place with a time of 21:21.

“All of my returning runners ran this race faster than they did last year,” Anderson said. “Improvement is all I can ask for.”

BOYS TENNIS

Carson drubs McQueen

Carson won five of six matches in each round en route to a 15-3 win over McQueen in a Northern Division I boys tennis match Thursday afternoon at Carson High.

Taylor Saarem went 2-0, winning 6-0 and 6-2, to lead the singles contingent. Tyler Warren and Jake Jones each went 1-1.

The top doubles tandems of Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury and Jared Hearn and Trevor Sollberger both went 2-0. Kunz and Woodbury won 6-0 and 6-1, while Hearn and Sollberger won 6-2 and 6-0.

Carson, which lost just 33 games in 18 matches, is now 7-2 on the season.

GIRLS TENNIS

McQueen edges Carson

Carson (3-4) won eight of nine singles matches but couldn’t pull out a win in doubles in a close 10-8 loss to the Lancers (3-3) at Centennial Park.

Preeta Amin continued to roll in singles by sweeping three matches and Anya Woodbury also swept while Shaylyn Segura won two of three in singles for the Senators. Amin won 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, Woodbury won 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Segura won 6-2, 6-0 and lost 6-2.

The Senators sustained several close losses in doubles, including the final match of the day in which Amanda Breen and Emma Breeding lost 7-6 to McQueen’s No. 2 doubles team. If they could have pulled out that match, they would have forced a tiebreaker. Breen and Breeding also had a close 6-4 loss.

Other close losses for Carson came in doubles when Abby Dudley and Anna Glenn lost 6-4 and Nancy Henricksen and Sahara Winder lost 6-4.

Douglas trounces Hug

The Tigers rolled to a 17-1 win over outmanned Hug on Thursday.

Franziska Dick, Amanda Williams, and Hannah Corgan each won three sets. Dick and Amanda Williams each won their last sets by default.

Terra Williams and Chandler Howe won 6-0, and two sets by default.

Kelsey Carlson and Shelby Casaus won 6-0, and two sets by default.

GIRLS SOCCER

Douglas blanks Vikings

MINDEN — Alissa Holley scored one goal and assisted on another while Silvia Fernstrom scored the game’s first goal for Douglas in its non-league win against South Tahoe.

Douglas improved its overall season record to 8-0 en route to its win against South Tahoe (7-2-1) in a matchup between opponents that are leading their respective Northern Division I and I-A league races. South Tahoe is the defending I-A state champion.

Fernstrom broke up a scoreless affair when she scored in the 18th minute, assisted by Holley after an entry pass from Alexis von Schottenstein.

Holley added insurance in the 68th minute when she blasted in a shot to the far post that found the upper right hand corner of the net.
