Veris Gold USA, owners of the Jerritt Canyon Mine in Elko County, have agreed to a $182,000 fine for failing to correctly report toxic chemical releases at the site.
A spokesman for the Environmental Protection Agency said the violations involved late and incorrect reporting for compounds including arsenic, cobalt, lead and mercury at the mine 50 miles north of Eureka. The law requires manufacturers who process make or use toxic chemicals file annual reports on how much of those chemicals are released into the environment, treated or recycled on-site or transferred for waste management.
That information goes into a public database.
