Recyclables offered for art contest

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is making materials available to participants in the Statewide Recycled Art Contest.

Recyclables, including plastic bottles, newspapers, aluminum cans and steel cans, can be picked up in the lobby of the Bryan Building, 901 S. Stewart St., on Friday, Oct. 3.

The art contest is open to all Nevada residents. Projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of entry form and photos of artwork are due by Oct. 31, and winners will be announced prior to America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.

Zombie run planned in Virginia City

Virginia City’s Redrun II — A Zombie Sequel, a six-mile course in which participants run from zombies through century-old train tunnels, the country’s only working stamp mill, haunted buildings and a train graveyard, will be on Oct. 11.

A celebration titled Zombie Manifestival will follow the event with live music and a beer crawl.

Fall events offered at Greenhouse Garden Center

Shrubs for Fall Color will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 4; Trees for Fall Color will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 11; Winterizing Your Pond will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 and Preparing Your Yard for Winter will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 25.

Healthy Trees and Just Brew It will host an old-fashioned apple cider press Oct. 25 at Greenhouse Garden Center. For fresh cider, bring washed and quartered apples with a container and lid from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Planes, pilots & flights featured at annual fly-in

Antique aircraft and modern military and fire-fighting planes will be showcased at the 17th annual Lyon County Fly-In from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4-5 at the Silver Springs Airport.

The event offers the Young Eagles First Flight program, in which youth ages 8 through 17 can fly for free with a general aviation pilot. The Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 1073 Truckee, provides the pilots, who volunteer their time, planes and expertise. There will be a pancake breakfast, free for pilots who fly in, from 7 to 10 a.m. each day, as well as displays of antique cars, a potluck dinner, line dancing, karaoke, and entertainment by Joseph Greco and Jamie Corbet.

Admission each day costs $5 per car. The rate for buses is $2 per person.

Lasagna cook-off set in Virginia City

Storey County Senior Center, at the corner of Six Mile Canyon Road and North E. Street in Virginia City, will hold its fourth annual Lasagna Cook-off & Feed at 6 p.m. Oct. 10.

To participate in the cook-off, bring a prepared lasagna in a pan that is at least 9-by-13-inches, or 4-by-5-inches for a small entry, to the center by 5:45 p.m.

There are two categories — traditional and non-traditional. All entries must include pasta. Store bought lasagnas will not be judged.

The event also offers a silent auction and raffle. Admission costs $7 per person and includes lasagna, salad and bread.

Melissa Blosser, Douglas County’s community relations coordinator and public information officer, will talk about crisis media relations management and how the Douglas County Public Information Office handled August’s flash flooding at the next Carson Area Marketing & PR Network meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 E. Proctor St.

CAMPN is an association of professional marketers, marketing communicators, and public relations executives who gather monthly to network and share marketing and public relations resources, ideas and tips.

Sierra Place, 1111 W. College Parkway, is holding free events in October. Western entertainer Sourdough Slim will combine vaudevillian and cowboy lore in his performance at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Mike Thomas will present Pathfinder of the West, a lecture about Kit Carson and John Fremont, at 10 a.m. Oct. 14.

Seminar emphasizes wellness for seniors

“Sharing positivity” will be the theme of this year’s TRIAD Senior Education Seminar, which will have an emphasis on wellness and safety for seniors, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Travis Lee, Douglas County Community Services division manager, will preside over the seminar. There will by presentations by Sheriff Ron Pierini; Deputy Fire Chief Dave Fogerson; Frank Jacobelli; Joseph McEllistrem; Peter Reed; Lynette Schweigert; and Leo Kruger.

The free seminar is designed for medical and health care professionals, social workers, MFT, emergency workers and seniors. Continuing education units are available. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
