RENO — When you think about Colby Brown, you think of him in terms of running the football and not catching the ball.

Brown gained 125 yards rushing, but he also had a season-best five catches for 59 yards in Carson’s 23-13 win over Hug Friday night at Rollins Stallworth Stadium.

Brown said earlier this season catching the ball was one thing he needed to improve on his new wingback position.

“Nolan (Shine) made some nice throws,” Brown said. “We put in some new plays this week.”

Two of his receptions went for first downs, including a 21-yarder that set up Johnny Barahona’s 22-yard field goal to end the first half.

Hug stars the real deal

Dikembe Montgomery and Roosevelt Calhoun.

Remember those two names as Hug fights for a playoff berth this season. Both enjoyed monster games.

Montgomery, the Hawks’ senior quarterback, showed his toughness and elusiveness all night. He carried 19 times for 196 yards, including TD runs of 16 and 77 yards.

Calhoun, who starts at fullback and linebacker, spearheaded a tough run defense and carried 14 times for 89 yards.

“They are both the real deal,” Carson coach Blair Roman said. “The whole team is the real deal.”

Montgomery single-handedly brought the Hawks back from a 17-0 deficit to 17-13 with his two TD runs. The 77-yard scamper was a combination of his elusiveness and Carson’s inability to wrap him up.

“He’s good,” Carson defensive back Caulin Bartley said. “He’s a good athlete. He’s slippery.”

Game of firsts

Several Carson players recorded firsts in the victory.

Long snapper Jacob Guthrie made a solo tackle on Carson’s last punt of the night.

Bartley had his first fumble recovery of the season.

Barahona kicked his first field goal of the year, a 22-yarder as time expired in the first half. He also missed his first PAT of the season.

Brandon Maffei intercepted his first pass of the season.
