Local sports roundup: CHS boys race to Mustang win

STOCKTON — Carson High’s boys track team, led by Corey Reid, Asa Carter and Chris Miranda, won the Mustang Invitational Saturday at Delta College.

Carson finished with 33 points and Downey was second with 17. The Carson girls were fourth with 19.5 points, 12 points behind Liberty-Brentwood.

Reid won the 110 hurdles in 15.29, the 200 in 22.02 and set a meet record in the 400 with a 48.45. He also was second in the pole vault, clearing 13-feet. Carter set a meet and school record with a mark of 44-8 in the triple jump and he was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 44.14. Miranda won the shot with a heave of 48-1 and the discus with a toss of 131-1.

Adam Maw was fifth in both hurdle events.

On the girls side, Maddie Preston and ValerieSue Meyer performed well.

Meyer won the 400 in 60.49 and was fifth in the 100 in 13.32. Preston set a meet record by winning the high jump at 5-4 and finishing second in the 200 at 27.0. She was fourth in the 100 hurdles at 17.09.

Athena Favero won the 300 hurdles in 47.60 and was fifth in the 200 in 27.35. Sahara Winder was third in the 100 (13.05) and fourth in the 400 at 1:02.77 and the 200 (27.26). Teresa Boehmer was fourth in the shot at 31-9 1/2.

Next up for the Carson team is the Thunder Invitational in Rocklin. Preston and Reid will travel to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in Southern California.

Dayton boys fourth at Reed

SPARKS — The Dayton boys finished fourth at the annual Reed-Sparks Rotary Invitational Saturday at Reed High School.

The 800 relay team of Dallon Mendoza, Tobias Tapley, Wesley Wright and Skyler Berntson took third in the 800 relay with a 1:32.86. The same group took fourth in the 400 relay with a 45.10. Tapley, Berntson, Mendoza and Brady Heusser were third in the 1600 relay (3:36.93).

Jon Ply was second in the high jump at 6-2 and Jesus Castaneda was third in the shot (48-7 1/2), Tapley was fourth in the 200 (23.76) and Huesser was sixth in the 3200 (10:34.85) and eighth in the 1600 (4:54.24).

Carson splits at Reed tourney

SPARKS — Take away the first inning Saturday, and Carson might have won its last two games of the Reed Easter Tournament.

The Senators surrendered 13 first-inning runs in their two games, and came away with a split. In the opener, Carson gave up six runs but still managed a 13-7 win over Crater-Oregon. In the second game, Carson gave up seven in the first to Wooster and dropped a 9-7 decision.

“We probably should have won both,” Carson coach Shane Quilling said. “The first inning really hurt us. We hit the ball pretty well today. We battled back from that 6-0 deficit in the first which was good to see.”

Bailey Allen went 2-for-3 in the first game, and Sarah Runge, Nicole Brown and Camiell Simpson had a hit apiece. Carson scored seven in the third inning to take control against Crater.

Simpson led the offense in the Wooster loss, going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Brown, Elise Brady and Allen all added two hits.

Carson hosts Damonte Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Dayton alums battle

DAYTON — The Jay Merrill-coached Gray team outlasted the Craig Miller-coached White squad, 10-8, at the Dayton Alumni game on Saturday.

“It was an amazing event and I was overwhelmed by the support from the community for doing this for the first time,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “The boosters did an outstanding job with lunch and concessions. Comstock Mining donated $3,000 and we donated $1,000 back to the Little League for a much-needed pitching machine. This was the kind of event we needed to bring back some of the players and families to help build for the future.

“The baseball was pretty good. Not a ton of walks and the old guys (1995-2006) came up a little short but everybody had a good time. I was really happy with the turnout. We dedicated our clubhouse in honor of coach Miller with a new sign that was unveiled as well as the numbers of (Matt) Bowman and (Jeremy) Kinney on the outfield wall.”

Jack Phillips went 2-for-3 with a double and homer, while Ryan Ransdell, Anthony Onstott, Ryan Shepherd and Austin Lee all had singles.

Kinney went 3-for-3 to lead the White squad, Anthony Cupp had a solo shot.

WNC avoids sweep

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Patience and persistence paid big dividends for the Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday.

Struggling to score runs in the first three games of their Scenic West Athletic Conference series with College of Southern Idaho, the Wildcats scored seven runs in the fifth through seventh innings to pull away to an 8-0 seven-inning victory.

The Wildcat offense made a winner of Ty Fox, who threw six scoreless innings, and reliever Josh Mill finished off the shutout by blanking the Golden Eagles in the final inning.

Fox gave up three hits, struck out four and walked one to raise his record to 4-1.

The win ended a four-game losing streak and moved the Wildcats back into second place in the SWAC standings at 11-9. Third-place CSI (10-10) slipped a game behind WNC. It was only CSI’s second home loss of the season.

Wildcats swept by CSI

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Home runs and dominant pitching in the circle propelled fourth-ranked College of Southern Idaho to 12-1 and 12-4 softball victories over Western Nevada College on Saturday, completing a four-game sweep of the Wildcats.

CSI blasted three home runs that brought home eight of its 12 runs to win the opener in five innings. Kami Merrill (15-3), a sophomore right-hander from Calgary, Alberta, limited the Wildcats to two hits.

In the second game, Kelsey Christensen (12-5) four-hit the Wildcats and the Golden Eagles blasted two more homers as CSI overcame a four-RBI performance by Melanie Mecham.

WNC, which dropped to 9-14 in the SWAC and 14-19 overall, travels to Salt Lake Community College for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
