CHS standout wins Arcadia decathlon

ARCADIA, Calif. — Carson High track standout Corey Reid has enjoyed some big moments in his track career, but none bigger than this week at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational.

Reid put on a strong showing in the second day to win the decathlon. Reid, who won three of the 10 events, finished with 7,191 points, a career-best score. Isaiah Oliver, the first-day leader, was second with 7,009 points.

“It’s one of the biggest (moments),” Reid said. I don’t know if it’s the biggest, because the 400 (at state) that was pretty good. I worked hard and a long time for this. I put so much time into this.”

“It was a good two days,” said Jim Reid, Carson High assistant coach. “We really didn’t know much about the field. The guy that puts on the meet never says much. The kid from Phoenix (Oliver) was pretty impressive.”

The win puts Reid first in the nation for decathlon and his 400 time is top in the state and probably in the top-10 in the country.

Reid won the high jump (6-5 1/2), 400 (47.37) and the 1500 (4:20).

The 1500 was his only win on Friday, the final day of the two-day event. He had strong second-day showings in the discus (2nd, 126-3), the pole vault (2nd, 13-5 1/4) and fourth-place finishes in the hurdles (15.59) and the javelin (149-8). He had a second-place showing in the 100 on Thursday, clocking a 11.13.

His worst finishes were a pair of seventh-place finishes in the long jump (20-2 1/4) and the shot put (40-7 1/2).

His throwing event marks were all PRs.

“That is one of the things we talked about (the throws),” said coach Reid. “He didn’t have to win, he just had to not lose points.”

“I did really well in the throwing events,” Corey Reid said. “The marks were all above what I usually do. I knew if I had an OK meet I could score 7,000. The last four times I long jumped I think I was around 20-10 so I was disappointed with that.”

Madison Preston, another senior at Carson, placed 18th in the seven-event heptathlon.

Her marks were: 16-5 3/4 in the long jump, 28-4 1/2 in the shot put, 2:39.48 in the 800, 17.423 in the 110-meter high hurdles, 27.42 in the 200 and a disappointing 4-11 3/4 in the high jump. She has consistently been jumping in the 5-2 and 5-4 range most of the season.

Gorman tops Carson, 12-3

HENDERSON — Carson High’s baseball team ended the Gorman Desert Classic with a 1-3 record after losing 12-3 to host Bishop Gorman Friday afternoon.

Carson, 8-12 overall, returns to action Tuesday at 3:45 at North Valleys. The Senators are 6-6 in Northern Division I play heading into the second half of the season.

Carson scored twice in its first at-bat on run-scoring singles by Kyle Krebs and Seamus Burns. Austin Cram doubled home a run off Bryce Moyle to make it 2-1 after one.

Gorman broke it open in the second with five runs to take a 6-2 lead, two of those runs coming on a double by Brandon Wulff, who went 4-for-4 with six RBI on the day.

Moyle singled home a run to make it 6-3, but the Gaels scored twice in the fourth and four times in the sixth.

Brandon Allen and Josiah Pongasi had two hits apiece, while Conner Pradere, Krebs, Burns, Moyle and Joe Nelson added one each.

“We had a chance to hurt them,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “We had a ton of guys on. If we could have gotten hits at key times we would have scored more runs.

“Bryce threw well. He gave up nine hits, and four of those were to Wulff. Their coaches were impressed with Bryce.”

Dayton dropped by Sparks, 9-8

SPARKS — The Railroaders scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to wipe out an 8-6 deficit and win 9-8 Friday in a Northern 1A game.

The loss wiped out a tremendous offensive display by the Baker boys, D.J. and Dylan, each of whom hit two three-run homers.

The Baker round-trippers gave the Dust Devils a 6-0 lead. Sparks scored three in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 7-6. Jesse Schmidt’s run-scoring single made it 8-6 after six.

Two walks, two hits and an error led to three runs and a win.

Douglas hammers Reed

RENO — An 11-run fifth-inning rally on Friday afternoon propelled Douglas to a come-from-behind 14-5 Northern Division I victory against Reed at Aces Stadium.

Down 4-1 going to the top of the fifth, Douglas (1-10 conference, 3-13 overall) scored 11 runs on three hits, six walks and two hit batsmen on its way to ending a 10-game losing streak.

Isaiah Scat and Zac Davies combined to limit a potent Reed lineup to eight hits. Schat, a sophomore left-hander, pitched five-plus innings to earn his first varsity career win and Davies, a senior, allowed one run over the final three innings to earn credit for the save.

Davies allowed one run on three hits in the seventh inning as the Tigers slammed the door shut for their win. Reed outhit Douglas 11-8 in the contest.

JC BASEBALL

WNC drops pair to Bruins

SALT LAKE — Salt Lake pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 2-all tie and grab a 3-2 win over Western Nevada College in the first game of Friday’s Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cate Field.

The Bruins won the second game, 11-5, after building an early 4-0 lead.

In the opener, Salt Lake took a 2-0 lead thanks to an error by Austin Andrews and a run-scoring single by Austin Ovard. Skyler Mahoney drove in the other run off Max Karnos, who dropped to 3-4 on the year.

WNC evened the game in the forth when Kody Reynolds tripled to center and scored on a single by D.J. Peters. The tying run scored on Andrews’ infield out.

Neither team threatened until the sixth.

After Western left the go-ahead run at second, Salt Lake went ahead.

Garrett Bushman singled and stole second. Ovard struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Zach Willis singled through the left side for what proved to be the game-wining run.

WNC outhit Salt Lake 6-3. Karnos fanned five and walked one in the losing effort.

In game two, the Bruins produced more hits in the first inning than they did for six innings against Karnos in the opener. Willis doubled in a pair of runs and Caleb Summerhays’ base hit scored two more runs as Salt Lake took a 4-0 lead against WNC starter Chase Kaplan.

Lichty was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and David Molder went 2 for 3 to lead WNC’s 11-hit attack.

Salt Lake moved into second place in the SWAC at 11-8, while WNC dropped to 11-12. The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with an 11 a.m. matchup today.

Salt Lake sweeps Wildcats

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — Western Nevada College’s losing softball record certainly can be deceiving.

The Wildcats gave second-ranked Salt Lake Community College all it wanted in their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at Bruin Field in Taylorsville, Utah.

Salt Lake held off WNC, 7-4, in game two after struggling to a 5-2 victory in the opener. With the sweep, Salt Lake remained in first place in the SWAC at 22-4.

Twelve of the Wildcats’ 21 defeats have come against Salt Lake and College of Southern Idaho, teams ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the nation.

WNC lost the opener despite freshman pitchers Kaitlyn Jimmy and Kristina George holding the Bruins to seven hits.

Jimmy took the loss, but three of the four runs she allowed in three innings were unearned. George allowed two hits and one earned run in her split duty.

Makaylee Jaussi, Gabriella Canibeyaz, Bailey Henderson and Kacie Freudenberger also contributed hits for the Wildcats.

WNC was even more competitive in the nightcap, taking a third-inning lead and rallying to within a run late in the game.

The Wildcats went ahead 2-0 in the third inning as Lauren Lesniak doubled in Jaussi and Sakuma knocked in Lesniak with a single.

The teams conclude their regular-season series with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. today.
