Mayor Robert Crowell scheduled a news conference associated with April 20 public downtown Carson City makeover theming workshops, a kickoff expected to embrace various projects.
The mayor is anticipated to talk of not only the downtown project but also of other business corridor improvements, the multi-purpose athletic center (MAC) already under construction, the animal services shelter project and related matters authorized under plans emanating from a previous city sales tax hike.
City Manager Nick Marano earlier signaled at a Board of Supervisors meeting there’s going to be an associated campaign to get residents on board with this and related efforts both in the public and private sector to heighten pride in the community as progress on the projects plays out over coming years.
The mayor’s news conference and associated first downtown theming workshop are set for 12:30 p.m., with the workshop running until 2:30. That evening the second theming workshop is scheduled from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Both workshops for public input will be on that third Monday in April and will be at the Sierra Room in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.
At the initial workshop, not only the mayor but various public officials will be on hand for his announcement and available for interviews afterward, according to a pre-event release. The theming workshops to follow are for public discussion of how the redesign should make the downtown look rather than details already decided, such as number of traffic lanes or sidewalk width.
“Members of the community are encouraged to use this opportunity to share their opinions on the new theme and feeling of the downtown corridor,” according to the pre-event release.
“The Carson Street Design project is one of the capital improvement projects approved by the city and is estimated to cost approximately $10 or $11 million,” the release stated, “and (is) funded from a one-eighth of a cent sales tax and (city government’s) Public Works funding.”
