Local sports roundup: Reid is fourth in elite 400 race at Arcadia

ARCADIA, Calif. — Corey Reid capped off a great weekend by finishing fourth in the 400 at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday night.

The 400 was the 11th event in three days for Reid, who won the two-day decathlon with a career-best 7,191 points.

Reid was timed in 47.94, a solid time against some of the best runners across the nation.

Maddie Preston took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 16-5 1/4 and was 15th in the triple jump at 35-9. She cleared 5-2 in the high jump.

• Carson junior Asa Carter won the triple jump (42-0), took seventh in the long jump (19-7) and ran a leg on the Senators’ fifth-place 1600 relay squad at Saturday’s Thunder Invitational in Rocklin.

Ian Schulz was second in the discus with a throw of 160-6 1/2 and Chris Miranda was fourth in the shot put at 45-11. Ian Van Rensselaer was seventh in the 1600 (4:35.16) and ran a leg on the 1600 relay squad. Hector Gomez-Barrios was 10th in the 400 at 52.22 and Ricardo Garcia was 11th in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6.

On the girls side, Sahara Winder was eighth in the 200 (26.92) and Azlynn McFadden was eighth in the shot put at 30-5 1/2. Abby Paulson was 11th in the triple jump at 28-7.

In frosh-soph, Greg Wallace cleared a career-best 6-6 to win the high jump and was third in the long jump at 19-6. Paulson was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 52.90. Makenzie McDaniel was fourth in the discus at 83-3 and Dylan Mayo was fifth in the triple jump at 39-2 1/2.

Reed edges Tigers

MINDEN — A five-run fifth inning rally was the difference Saturday as Reed rallied for a 10-7 Northern Division I win against Douglas.

Douglas (1-11 conference, 3-14 overall) led 2-1 going into the fifth inning, only to see Reed (8-3, 12-8-1) turn the tables. One day before, Douglas knocked off Reed, 14-5, thanks to an 11-run fifth.

Alec Leighton drew a bases loaded walk to break a 2-2 tie and Austin May followed with a bases clearing double to spark the Raiders’ rally.

Cale Kynett hit 2-for-3 with a triple, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, Hayden Keller 2-for-4 with a double and Kaleb Foster 2-for-2 with 3 RBI to lead the Tigers from the top three spots in the batting order. Nick Wilkinson delivered an RBI double in the sixth.

Kynett tripled and scored on Foster’s sacrifice fly to tie the score 1-1 in the first. Kindel Isham walked and scored on a Foster sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the third.

Reed outhit Douglas, 11-10 in the game.

Dayton swept by Sparks

SPARKS — Slow starts hurt Dayton High in its doubleheader loss to the Railroaders Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Dayton fell behind 3-0 before rallying to tie the game at 9 and eventually lost 15-12. In the second game, Sparks led 5-0 and held off a late Dayton rally to win 5-4.

“It’s tough when you have a chance to win all three games in a series and can’t find a way to get even one,” coach Mike Burrows said. “We need to pay more attention to detail and keep grinding. It doesn’t get any easier with a single against Tahoe and three against Fallon, arguably the best team in Northern 1A.”

Trevor Burrows’ two-run single gave Dayton a 12-9 lead in the fifth, but Sparks scored six in the sixth to take the lead for good. D.J. Baker went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener and Mike Selmi also had three hits.

Schmidt drove in two seventh-inning runs for Dayton in the second game, while Selmi and D.J. Baker drove in one run each.

JC BASEBALL

Bruins outlast WNC 6-5

WEST JORDAN, Utah — A two-out, seventh-inning rally was just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday at Cate Field.

Kody Reynolds and D.J. Peters hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh inning to put the Wildcats in front 5-4. However, Salt Lake Community College delivered a two-out rally of its own in the ninth to pull out a 6-5 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory.

Reliever Josh Mill retired the first two Bruins in the ninth, but a walk to Michael Macove, a double by Skyler Mahoney and a game-winning single by Garrett Bushman gave Salt Lake a series sweep of the Wildcats.

WNC’s SWAC record slipped to 11-13 with eight conference games remaining. The Wildcats are 24-20 overall.

WNC opened the scoring when Austin Andrews knocked in Reynolds with a second-inning base hit. Later in the same inning, Blake Morin singled to fill the bases, but Salt Lake got out of the jam with a double play.

WNC starter Ty Fox allowed just one hit through the first three innings.

After the Wildcats went ahead in the seventh, Salt Lake came right back to knot the score. Barlow’s second double of the game plated Chris Fougner, who reached on a single and advanced two bases on wild pitches.

Mill (0-1) made his fifth appearance of the season, relieving Fox to start the seventh. Fox gave up six hits and three earned runs in six innings. He walked four and struck out one.

WNC continues its 16-game SWAC road swing with a four-game series at Colorado Northwestern starting Friday.

JC SOFTBALL

Salt Lake sweeps WNC

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — Although Western Nevada College came away empty in its four-game series with second-ranked Salt Lake Community College on Saturday, the Wildcats demonstratedtheir program isn’t that far behind one of the nation’s best.

Elisha Jahnke one-hit WNC over the first six innings of the opener and the Bruins scored five runs in the middle innings to win 6-1. Jahnke, Baylee Reeves and Lauren Frailey combined on a four-hitter and Raeana Gall knocked in four runs as the Bruins completed the four-game sweep with a 7-1 second-game victory.

The Wildcats extended the Bruins to seven innings in each game and prevented Salt Lake from scoring more than seven runs.

The SWAC leaders improved to 24-4 in conference play and 34-6 overall. WNC is 9-18 and 14-23.

WNC utilized its fourth pitcher of the weekend when Sadee Sorensen started in the circle in Saturday’s opener. Other than an unearned run in the first, Sorensen kept the Bruin offense in check early on, yielding two hits in the first two innings.

Jahnke was nearly unhittable for the Wildcats. She didn’t allow a hit through five innings, striking out five and walking two.

Makaylee Jaussi ended Jahnke’s no-hit bid by leading off the sixth with a bunt single. Following a walk to Melanie Mecham and a groundout, Jaussi came home with WNC’s only run on Gabriella’s Canibeyaz’s groundout.

Chelsa Baca relieved Jahnke in the seventh, and the Wildcat hitters found her pitches more to their liking. Dakota Robinson and Pamela Sakuma rapped out hits, but the Wildcats were unable to make a dent into Salt Lake’s lead.

Salt Lake snapped a 1-1 tie in the nightcap with a four-run fourth inning. Gall’s two-run double put the Bruins ahead for good, 3-1. Corinne Cleverly’s two-run homer capped the four-run inning.

Gall connected for a two-run homer in the sixth to extend Salt Lake’s lead to 7-1.

After playing two of the nation’s top-5 teams over the past two weekends, WNC will return home to meet Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday and Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Reno 3-6, Douglas 1-0

MINDEN — Kali Sargent only allowed two earned runs as she pitched a complete game and went 2-for-3 with a home run, however, Reno took a 3-1 win in the opener of a doubleheader.

Reno’s Morgan Eisele pitched a five-hit shutout to win game two, 6-0. Shaena Robinson hit 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers.
