Time is starting to run out on Carson High’s softball team.
The Senators started the day two games out of the eighth and final playoff spot, and losing 10-0 to Bishop Manogue didn’t help any.
Carson is 3-10 in league going into Saturday’s doubleheader at Galena. First pitch is 10 a.m.
The Senators’ offense struggled against Klamath Henry, getting just four runners on base. Carson’s only it came in the fifth when Bailey Allen hit a two-out single to break up the no-hitter. Henry fanned seven and walked four.
The closest Carson came to scoring was in the first when Camiell Simpson walked, moved to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch. Henry caught Elise Brady looking at a third strike to end the inning. Carson never got a runner past first base the rest of the way.
Manogue scored three in the first off Lauren Lemburg and then tacked on seven more in the second, including a three-run homer by Alex Day and a two-run single by Ros Esua.
After that, the Miners had chances to score, but coach Dave Hargrove had runners intentionally leave bases early for automatic outs.
Carson didn’t play well in the field, as a couple of flyballs dropped in that probably shouldn’t have.
“Lauren didn’t pitch that badly,” coach Shane Quilling said. “If we could have made a couple of plays in the outfield...”
Spanish Springs knocks off Douglas
SPARKS — Hayley Fein pitched a complete game six-hitter on Thursday to help Spanish Springs to a 7-3 Northern Division I win at home against Douglas.
Douglas (7-5 conference, 13-9 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, only to see Spanish Springs (12-1, 18-5) answer with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Douglas scored single runs in the third to pull within 4-3, however, the Cougars added some insurance with three more runs in the sixth.
Fein allowed two earned runs to go with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Bailey Ivory went 3-for-4 and Vanessa Almario 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI to lead the Cougars’ 12-hit attack.
BASEBALL
McQueen outlasts Douglas
MINDEN — McQueen scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-all tie and went on to a 5-1 win at Tiger Field.
Jon Weethee pitched 5.2 innings and worked out of bases loaded jams in the third and fifth innings en route to a win that gave McQueen (4-6, 8-8) a two-game lead over Douglas (2-12 conference, 4-14 overall) in the race for eighth-place and the league’s final playoff berth.
Douglas left 10 runners on base in the contest. Six of those runners were left stranded in scoring position between the third and sixth innings.
McQueen took a 1-0 lead in the second with an unearned run off Douglas starter Isaiah Schat.
Douglas pulled even in the third when Tomas Leitenbauer singled, advanced on Kindel Isham’s sacrifice bunt and scored from second base on Cale Kynett’s long sacrifice fly to center field. Zac Davies and Kaleb Foster followed with line drive singles, then Haydn Brown walked on a full-count pitch to load the bases. The Tigers were unable to do any further damage, however, as Weethee retired the side on a soft liner to second base.
The Lancers took a 4-1 lead in the fifth, aided by run-scoring infield singles by Mike Behm and Roman Satroplus and Branden Yawn’s sacrifice fly.
Satroplus retired four of the six batters he faced to end the game and earn credit for a save.
Douglas hosts Hug in a conference doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
