Robert Miller of Gardnerville scored his second win of the season in the IMCA Modified division at Fernley 95A Speedway last Saturday night.

Miller started mid-pack and steadily worked his way to the front, holding off Reno’s Jake Holland through several restarts in the closing laps. Dayton’s Royce Goetz finished third, followed by Walter Ball of Fernley and Truckee driver Russell Rosario, the top five in the 20-car field.

Pro Stock honors went to Reno’s Travis Peterson, who beat Carson City racers Al Goss and Gary Nevers to the checker. Gardnerville’s Dwight Bolton won the Street Stock main handily, chased home by Rick Miller of Sun Valley, Reno’s Jesse Vankol, J.T. Stark of Sun Valley, and Silver Springs resident Jimmy Berhorst.

Reno’s Joe Frock ran away with the Dwarf division main, sprinting away at the start and driving into the distance. Behind him a battle raged for second between Billy Wilson and Winnemucca’s Rodney Sweet, with Wilson taking the position at the checker. Calvin Ryle of Fernley finished fourth ahead of Yerington’s Roy Peterson.

In the Super Stock 4 division, it was Justin Busch of Fernley taking the checker first after a spirited battle with Kenny Schmidt in both drivers’ first race of the season. Kenny Martin was third, followed by Carson City’s Danielle Pain and Aaron McIlvain. The evening led off with the Pure Stock main, won handily by 2014 champion Rich Innis of Reno. Jim Paulk and Trevor Quell were second and third respectively.

Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson on becoming the second two-time winner of 2015 and locking himself into this year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship. It was Johnson’s fifth victory at Texas Motor Speedway, and his first in the spring race there. Only Johnson and Kevin Harvick have scored two victories on the season. Another winner at Texas was 18 year old Erik Jones, who showed he’s one of NASCAR’s rising stars by beating veterans Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brad Keselowski in last Friday’s Xfinity series race. Will we see young Jones in the No. 18 Sprint Cup Toyota sitting in for the injured Kyle Busch soon?

This week the Sprint Cup returns to short track racing at Bristol, a far cry from the high speeds of the Texas track. The Bristol race is in support of broadcaster Steve Byrnes, who’s fighting cancer. Ryan Newman will come into Bristol with 25 more points than he had last week. The National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld the P5 level penalty of 50 points and $75,000 but removed the 25 point, $50,000 enhancement NASCAR had added because it was a post-race inspection penalty. The team has one more round of appeal, to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Panel.

The inaugural New Orleans IndyCar race at NOLA Motorsports Park saw James Hinchliffe score his first win for his new car owner Sam Schmidt. Aided by multiple cautions caused by a wet track and a few drivers being over exuberant on restarts, Hinchcliffe stretched his fuel and made it to the checker on one pit stop in the shortened event. He cut it so fine the tank ran dry on the cool-down lap, and his crew had to push him to Victory Lane. The IndyCars visit Long Beach this weekend.
