SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Secret Santa comes in the spring

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the anonymous (we especially like the fact the person stayed anonymous) donor of dozens of bags of stuffed animals to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, who will distribute the gifts to children who have been involved in traumatic situations.

SILVER DOLLAR: Other unsung heroes honored last week and deserve our recognition are Carson City’s dispatchers. Last week was National Dispatchers Week and here in Carson City we owe a great deal of gratitude to those who make sure our first responders report to emergencies as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High track standout Corey Reid for his win in the decathlon last week at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in Southern California. Reid beat some of the nation’s top high school athletes with an impressive score of 7,191 points.

SILVER DOLLAR: To former Douglas High baseball standout Niko Saladis, who’s now working in the front office for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Triple A affiliate, the Reno Aces. Saladis has been promoted to the position of marketing partnerships account executive with the team.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Peggy Sweetland, director of the McKinney/Vento Students in Transition Program, and all those who are involved the program who made sure nearly 400 pairs of shoes are being distributed to students in Carson City.
