Matters About Lake Tahoe. We learn from Hank Monk that there are busy times up at the lake. Night before last there were 30 registered guests at the Glenbrook. Bliss, Yerington and party were there. About 260 men are at work on the railroad which Bliss is constructing. They are laying the rails in the tunnel and mining the dirt by hand.

The chopping block — The heads that fell yesterday. T.R. Hofer, Chief Clerk of the Mint, was informed that his resignation would be accepted. C.O. Appleberg, watchman, was notified of his suspension; also, Charles Wilson of the Deposit and Melters room, M.W. Starling, computing clerk, Willie Adams, Assayer’s Department, and Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Mason, seamstresses, were also discharged. Telegrams to Washington for reasons are expected from the Mint director.

The first strawberries of the season arrived at Baker’s this morning and it was not long before Carson housewives learned the fact and made short work of the consignment.
