Young performers will bring historical characters to life in a chautauqua program sponsored by the Nevada State Museum from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Young Chautauqua, directed by Anita Watson, is an intense program of scholarship, research, rehearsal, and performance.
Young chautauquans commit to developing a theatrical character in late January, then they spend months reading biographies, learning stories, and rehearsing their character in front of other young scholars at bimonthly meetings.
They each create a costume and polish flexible 5- to 15-minute monologues they present to community groups, schools, libraries, service organizations, and at Nevada Humanities Chautauqua in Reno.
Performers at Saturday’s event will portray Osa Johnson, Robert Baden-Powell, John Muir, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank and Coco Chanel.
The program is offered in partnership with Nevada Humanities, which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, NV Energy, the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, individual donors, parent and community volunteers, and many other community partners.
The program Family Fun Saturday series is at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.
No reservations necessary, but early arrival is recommended. Another performance will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. if the first show sells out.
Admission is $8 for adults and free for museum members and children ages 17 and under.
