‘Red Nose’ rummage sale is Saturday for charity
Walgreens is hosting its “Red Nose” charity rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in its parking lot, 1465 E. William St.
Donations of gently used items are being accepted in advance at Walgreens. Proceeds from the sale go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Children’s Health Fund; Feeding America; LIFT; Charity: Water; GAVI Alliance; The Global Fund; Oxfam America; and Save the Children.

Community roast Saturday in Dayton
Central Lyon Youth Connections will roast Jannette Hoffert and Nancy Sbragia and honor its thrift shop volunteers at it community roast event from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. in Dayton.
Tickets cost $40 each, or $75 for two. The cost includes a ravioli dinner, and prizes like dinners and golf. Overnight packages will be raffled.
All funds go to the Youth Volunteer Connections program, in which young people learn leadership skills and explore career options while earning an elective credit.

Dance for mothers & sons planned in Gardnerville
Mothers and their sons are invited to dance to a diverse range of music by a disc jockey at Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department’s Mother-Son Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.
Refreshments and keepsake photos will be available for purchase. Tickets cost $10 per person and are available in advance at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Chili on the Comstock kicks off Saturday in Virginia City
The 32nd annual Chili on the Comstock will bring the heat to the Comstock from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Virginia City, where more than 30 professional chili cooks will be on hand.
This year’s event includes #CrawlBackInTime Fireball Saloon Crawl, a sampling of themed beverages from 15 locations. New this year is the Fun with the Runs, an inaugural 5K that starts at 10 a.m. on C Street. Runners and walkers will make their way through the hilly terrain and back to the cook-off venue. Participants are encouraged to dress in costume with winners to be selected prior to the race.
Family-friendly activities also include the Kids Zone with a bungee trampoline, giant slide and bounce house located at the Delta Saloon parking lot. Single tickets sold the day of the event.
Tasting kits are on sale at VisitVirginiaCityNV.com. Prices are $5 for six tastings; $10 for 14 tastings; $30 for 30 tastings and two Kids Zone passes; and $60 for 40 tasting tickets and four saloon crawl cups.
Admission to the Fireball Saloon Crawl is $10, a fee that includes one drink and allows participants to sample themed specialty drinks with discounts for additional beverage purchases.

Free admission offered at Virginia City museums
Virginia City is bringing its social media hashtag back for a second year in Flashback Friday Museum Days, an event in which 10 museums filled with historic Comstock lore waive admission costs on the first Friday of the month, May through October.
A museum pass is required for admission and is available at the Virginia City Visitors Center, 86 S. C St.
The museum pass also serves as a ticket for free transportation on the Virginia City Trolley, which runs to each museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Participating museums include: Comstock History Center; Historic Fourth Ward School Museum; Julia Bulette Red Light Museum; LEC No. 1 Comstock Firemen’s Museum; The Mackay Mansion; Saint Mary’s in the Mountains Catholic Church & Museum; Silver Terrace Cemetery; Storey County Courthouse; The Washoe Club Haunted Museum; and The Way It Was Museum.
Although admission is free, visitors are asked to donate, as the museums rely on contributions to keep their doors open.
Visitors who share photos and videos on social networking sites using #VCFlashbackFriday are entered to win two passes to an upcoming event, including the 56th Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races and Taste of the Comstock.

Cheetah run planned May 24
Cheetahs, the world’s fastest land animals, will run at top speeds at 5:30 p.m. May 24 as part of Animal Ark’s Cheetah 500, an event that takes place at the wildlife sanctuary in Reno.
Reservations are required, and children must be at least 8 years old to attend.
Tickets cost $40 for adults and $35 for seniors and $30 for children ages 8-16. Ticket sales support Animal Ark, which is at 1265 Deerlodge Road.
