Local sports roundup: Dayton rallies to upset win

RENO — Dayton High fought back from a 5-0 deficit to grab an 11-7 win over South Tahoe in a Northern Division I game at Aces Ballpark Tuesday afternoon.

“After going down five runs we managed to show some heart with the five-run third and make it a new game,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “We got some production from the bottom part of our order, contributing five of our 11 runs and that was the difference.

“We really needed this one, and to get it at Aces Ballpark makes it that much more special. We’ve had this one circled on our calendar for a while being it was the first time there. I was happy for the kids that it was a positive experience, and we look forward to making it an annual game on the schedule for years to come.”

The Vikings scored four in the first off Michael Selmi, and added one in the second for the aforementioned 5-0 lead. Dayton, thanks to three hits, a hit batsman, an error and fielder’s choice, tied the game in the third.

Each team scored a run in the fourth, with Jaret Reed doubling home Trevor Burrows.

South Tahoe went ahead 7-6 in the fifth, but the Dust Devils scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh for the win. D.J. Baker. Reed, Burrows and Marcos Saylor all had run-scoring hits.

Burrows led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Reed and Baker added two each.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Wooster knocks off Senators

RENO — The Senators struggled defensively, and the Colts took advantage to score a 9-5 Northern Division I win Tuesday afternoon.

“It was disappointing,” coach Shane Quilling said. “They are a team we can play with. We made four or five errors. I think they only had four earned runs.”

Lauren Lemburg started, but gave way to Makenzie Tucker after the Colts built a 5-1 lead.

The Senators managed eight hits, including two by Bailey Allen and two by Lemburg. Allen drove in two runs. Camiell Simpson, Elise Brady, Terryn Earle and Sarah Runge also had a hit apiece.

Carson hosts Wooster at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Douglas routs North Valleys

MINDEN — Madison Parks, Shaena Robinson and Makayla Shaver combined for six hits to lead Douglas to an 8-1 victory at home against North Valleys.

Douglas (13-6 conference, 19-10 overall) pushed across five runs in the second inning to break up a 1-all contest and the Tigers went on to post their seventh straight win.

Parks and Robinson drove in two runs each for the Tigers, who finished with eight hits against North Valleys ace Bailee Glover.

Kali Sargent pitched a complete game six-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.

Glover allowed three earned runs and six walks to go with eight strikeouts.

South Tahoe blanks Dayton

The Vikings rolled to an easy win. Kayla Celedon singled in the sixth inning and Mallory Dickenson pitched well in a losing effort.

Carson girls win JV title

Carson High won the JV girls title at the Sierra JV Invitational Tuesday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson finished with 45 points, edging Reed by two points and Damonte by three points. Damonte Ranch won the JV boys title with 63 points compared to 58.5 for Reed and 36 for Carson.

Dajarrah Navarro won the long jump (15-feet) and the high jump (4-6), and placed fourth in the triple jump (26-6 1/2).

Maddie Jergesen won the discus with a throw of 93-6 and took third in the shot at 27 feet. Jiavanna Wongfonnato won the 3200 (14:20.94) and took second in the 1600 (6:22.09). Sarah Franklin won the 1600 (6:18.56).

Kiefer Catron won the 3200 (11:24.08), Corey Jasper took the discus (114-11) and finished second in the shot (43-4). Jared Myrehn won the high jump (5-6) and Ricardo Garcia took the pole vault (11-0). Harry Meyer was fourth in the 110 hurdles (18.04).

RENO ACES

Reno bullpen stymies Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. — Riding a five-game losing streak entering Tuesday’s affair, the Reno Aces finally got over the hump — barely — by snapping their skid with a narrow 3-2 win against the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park.

A two-out, two-run double by Trayvon Robinson in the fourth was enough for a wildly effective A.J. Schugel who set a career-high with six walks in five innings.

A shaky ninth by Jake Barrett overshadowed excellent work by the relief corps, but the 23-year-old managed to escape a bases-loaded jam for his fourth save.

The Aces (9-11) tacked on their final two runs on Robinson’s two-bagger in the fourth, proving to be the deciding blow.

The Aces have a travel day today before opening up a four-game set Thursday night at Las Vegas. Left-hander Vidal Nuño (2-1, 3.60) starts for the Aces against left-hander Steven Matz (2-1, 2.01). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Pack pounds Gaels

RENO — The Wolf Pack rode the arm of Evan McMahan and the bat of Bryce Greager to an easy 12-5 win over Saint Mary’s Tuesday night at Peccole Park.

McMahan went 5.2 innings, allowing a run and two hits. Greager went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs.

The Pack, 34-11, hosts Saint Mary’s today at 4 p.m.
