SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Custom vests and custom cars

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Sierra Veterinary Hospital for raising $5,000 to provide protective vests for the five dogs in the Carson City Sheriff’s K-9 unit. The vests are obviously well-deserved for the dogs since they also put their lives on the line to protect the public and the law enforcement officers they serve. With the help of Vested Interest in K9s Inc., a non-profit organization who provides protective vests for law enforcement dogs, each dog in the unit received their own custom vest.

SILVER DOLLAR: Speaking of custom, a Silver Dollar goes to all those involved in organizing last weekend’s Silver Dollar Car Classic and to all those who showed their custom vehicles in the event. We’ve written about this before, but there’s a growing preference to the smaller Silver Dollar Car Classic over the more commercialized Hot August Nights.

SILVER DOLLAR: On another law enforcement note, to local public safety officers for putting on last week’s National Week Out, which gave the public a behind the scenes look at what they do. And to all those who attended the event.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and the William N. Pennington Foundation in their efforts to raise and provide funds for a much-needed teen center. The Boys and Girls Clubs exceeded their goal of $400,000 to make the 6,000-square foot teen center a reality. Also obviously to all those who donated to the cause, including the anonymous donor who donated $100,000.
