A local veteran support group paid homage to fallen soldiers with a monument in Kilwanis Park in Dayton on Saturday.
The Ghost Soldiers Motorcycle Club in Dayton is a veteran support group that helps the families of fallen soldiers by helping with expenses, escorting families to the funerals and resurrecting statues in the soldiers’ honor. The club raised the money to create a 6 foot tall monument to represent all of the U.S. soldiers killed in battle from the Revolutionary War to date. The statue will be in Kilwanis Park in Dayton.
“We are trying to get recognition for soldiers who paid the high price and make sure they get honored,” said Ghost Soldiers President Tom Lakey.
The club raised $3,000 for the statue, through donations from the residents and businesses in the community. All of the granite for the statue was cut, engraved and installed for free.
A ceremony occurred Saturday morning at the statue with speeches from a local judge and pastor as well as the 21-gun salute and a flag folding to present.
