SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: We all mourn, come together

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: A silver dollar doesn’t seem to be the most appropriate recognition for what we’ve all been through the past week, but we do need to recognize in this column the service of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell, killed in the line of duty last weekend. A former Marine, Carson City as has been shown in its outpouring of support, has shown Howell will never be forgotten. We in Carson City also will never forget the outpouring of support from others across the country.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Department of Veterans Services for hosting the events to honor World War II veterans last weekend at both state veterans’ cemeteries in Boulder City and Fernley. The events were held in honor of the 70th anniversary of when World War II ended on Aug. 14, 1945. The events were a fitting tribute to our greatest generation.

WOODEN NICKEL: While it’s likely to be an unintentional oversight, it’s come to our attention there are area businesses who have failed to lower the American flag they display to half-staff in honor of Howell. We do recognize the businesses who have lowered their flag to half-staff, but those who run these businesses and their customers need to know their failure to lower their flag to half-staff is a major breach of etiquette to say the least. And we wouldn’t disapprove of people letting these places know about their failure to honor Howell.
