Carson High tennis players fared well at the recent Carson Tennis Club’s Compass Tournament at Centennial Park.
In junior boys doubles, the teams of Ryan Toita and Henry Sturm, Chris Lawrence and Bradley Wiggins, Brett Pederson and Alek Henricksen, and Nico Salm and Zach Simms all compiled 2-1 records to tie for first place. In junior girls, Katy and Emma Breeding won the East title, beating Douglas players Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomroy, 8-5. South Lake Tahoe’s Caia Enriquez teamed with Carson’s Mikaela Asby to win the West title, 8-6, over Douglas’ Kelsey Carlson and Shelby Casaus. Carson’s Shaylin Segura teamed with Galena’s Amy Eftimoff to win the Northeast title over Carson’s Anya Woodbury and Douglas’ Chandler Howe. The Northwest title went to Amanda Schulz and Eleanor Sturm, who defeated Carson classmates Kenzie Henley and Heather LaMotte, 8-4.
In junior mixed doubles, Woodbury and Henricksen won all three of their matches.
Carson City’s Brandon Rank defeated Yazir Nauhm of Reno, 8-5 for the East title. Carson’s Steve Crouch beat Val White, 8-1, for the West title. CHS grad Blake Sly beat Douglas County’s Joel Newmeyer, 8-1, for the Northeast crown, and South Tahoe grad Grant Jones knocked off Fallon’s Ben Casad, 8-1, in the Northwest title match.
Sly and Kyle Horvath beat Nauhm and Brian Trotter, 8-5, to win the adult men’s doubles East title, and Ben Contine and Duncan Deasy, both CTC members, beat Carson’s Frank Blankenship and Ben Casad, 8-5, for the West title. Crouch and South Tahoe’s Mike Lannoy beat James Gonzales and Rank, 8-5, in the Notheast finale, and South Tahoe’s Paul Green teamed with CTC member Bill Webb for the Northwest title.
In adult mixed doubles, Kelvin Ikehare and Diane Sheridan beat Dan and Kathy Hannah, 8-3, in the East finale, and CTC members Mike and Nancy Helm knocked off Jimmy and Patty Chang, 8-5, for the West crown. Reno’s Albert Lewis and Carly Garamendi knocked off CTC members Yrma Haro and Tex Webb, 8-3, in the Northeast final, and James Gonzales and Vicki Creelman defeated Paul and Jodi Pederson, 8-2, in the Northwest finale.
In adult women’s doubles, Angie Free and Lou Eftimoff went 3-0 to win the title. Diane Hilliard and Keri Baer were second at 2-1.

Elks slate soccer shootout Aug. 29
The annual Elks Soccer Shoot Competition is set for Aug. 29 at Lampe Park.
The contest is open to all boys and girls in the following divisions — 7 and under, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12-13. You don’t need to be an AYSO player to participate.

August is locals month at Silver Oak
Silver Oak has designated August as locals month.
Golfers can enjoy $40 green fees seven days a week any time of the day. Also included in that price is a small bucket of range balls.
Mary Luster and Carli Vandervort shot net 61s to tie for first in Flight 1 at the recent Silver Oak Women’s Club outing on July 30. Kathy Washburn, Terri Paden and Cheryl Stoddard tied for third with 67s.
Sue Farcello won Flight 2 with a net 64, one shot ahead of Jeri Mihelic and Marty Lewis. Tina Luce was fourth with a 70.
Adrian wins tiebreaker at Empire Ranch
Al Adrian won Flight A via tiebreaker over John Tierney at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event. Both had net 64s.
Tom Welton took third in a tiebreaker over John Masiello. Both finished at 67.
Mike Rogers won a tiebreaker over Al Giannotti to win Flight B. Both shot 66s, two shots better than Rod Corbit and Nils Sharpe. Gary Mick won Flight C with a 59, two shots better than Wes Franklin and eight better than Rudy Hammond. Chris Nenzel won Flight D in a tiebreaker over Peter Youngdahl. Both shot 61s. Norm Scoggin was third with a 63.
The senior men are playing out of town today, so golfers can play all day at Empire Ranch for $30, which includes a $5 voucher for the restaurant. Call 885-2100.
Schreiber wins at Carson Valley
Jeff Schreiber shot a net 69 to win Carson Valley Men’s Club stroke play event on July 26.
Bill Allen (70) and Jack Sparman (73) were second and third, respectively. Joe Morrison won Flight B with a 63, three shots ahead of Brent Holderman and four clear of John Pearson. Mel Ness won Flight C in a tiebreaker over Jim Arens. Both shot 67s. Bob Van Nort was third with a 69.
Marc Menezes shot a net 68 to win the A flight in the Aug. 3 event CVGC. Jeff Schreiber was a shot behind at 69.
David Morris won Flight B with a 66, two shots better than Charley Poe and Eric Steele. Matt Budjako won Flight C with a 65, four strokes clear of Augie Martinez. Jack Zippwald won Flight D in a tiebreaker over Gary Carsten. Both shot 69s.
Charity golf event at Washoe GC
The Sons of Nevada will host this year’s Jimmy Olivas Athletic Foundation golf event at Washoe Golf Club in Reno.
The cost is $100, which includes, golf, cart, a barbecue after the event and other prizes. If you want to attend the barbecue and not play golf, the cost is $20. The event will start at 9 a.m. and registration begins at 7.
