150 years ago

Indian skirmish. A correspondent of the Sacramento Union writing from Smoke Creek, Roop County, about 50 miles east of Susanville, under date of Aug. 12, says: Captain W.L. Knight and Lieutenant Frederick Weed, with a small detachment of Company D., Second Calvary California Volunteers, have just come in from a scout after Indians; having had a slight skirmish, killing two and severely wounding two others, capturing 17 head of beef cattle and five head of horses, bows and arrows, buckskins, etc.

The Appeal is in receipt of a neatly printed catalogue in which a list of premiums to be awarded at the State Fair in Reno next month. Of concern is awards open to California and Oregon thoroughbreds that can come to Nevada and walk off with all the money that can be gathered in.

70 years ago

Forty-six children from the Nevada State Orphan’s Home were “stuffed” Sunday when entertained by the Central Trades and Labor Council of Reno at Bower’s Mansion. The high spot of the event was in the field of eating with the council providing a mountain of food, of which the children promptly turned into valleys.

50 years ago

New officers for the 1965-66 Nevada Day Committee were filed Monday with the Secretary of State’s office. The new officers are Les Montevaldo, Chairman; G.W. Swede Russell, Treasurer; and Mrs. Fred Raymond, Secretary.
