Nevada’s Division of Emergency Management has received $6,734,500 in two federal homeland security grants.

A spokesman said the money will fund programs to improve emergency preparedness throughout the state. The money comes through two sources: the Urban Area Security Initiative and the State Homeland Security Program.

The UASI grant is for $3 million to enhance regional preparedness by local as well as state security efforts in 26 high-threat, high-density urban areas.

The remaining $3,734,500 is dedicated to preparedness measures throughout the state. It covers planning, equipment, training and exercises to prevent, protect against, mitigate and recover from acts of not only terrorism but catastrophic events.

Emergency Management Chief Caleb Cage said the grant funding provides Nevada with a great opportunity for leadership in priority areas including cyber security, intelligence, public information and warning, operations coordination and mass care.
