Prep roundup: Carson VB third in tourney

The Carson High volleyball team got off to an impressive start to the season by finishing third out of 40 teams at the high-powered Las Vegas Invitational Saturday.

After going 3-0 in pool play Friday, the Senators advanced to the upper division and went 3-0 to advance to the semifinals of the event. CHS ended up 6-1 overall in the tournament.

On Saturday, Carson beat Golden Valley of Bakersfield, Calif., 25-19, 25-18 and then came away with an impressive win over Utah power Skyline, winning 27-26, 20-25, 15-13. Carson then advanced to the semifinals with a 25-14, 25-12 win over Chatsworth, Calif.

In the semifinals, Carson ran into a powerful San Dieguito Academy squad from San Diego, losing 14-25, 22-25.

Jaycie Roberts made the all-tournament team for the Senators, finishing the event with 23 digs, one assist, 39 kills and four blocks. Carson coach Robert Maw also said Keelin Pilgrim had an outstanding all-around tournament, especially on defense. Pilgrim finished with 45 digs, one assist, one block and 24 kills.

Also for CHS, sophomore setter Natalie Anderson had 25 digs, 61 assists, 12 kills and two blocks, freshman Abby Pradere had 14 digs and 30 assists, Juliana Anderson had 32 digs, two assists, 21 kills and two blocks, Allie Kibbe had one dig, one assist and six kills, Ari Schmidt had one dig and one block, Gabby Palazzolo had five kills and four blocks, Katie Matuska had one dig, Maddie Jergesen had one assist, 13 kills and six blocks, Kylie Riske had two digs, two assists, 17 kills and 11 1/2 blocks, Makenzie Tucker had 38 digs, eight assists and one kill and Skylar Scwartz had four digs and two assists.

“It was a really great tournament for us,” Maw said. “It was a great start. We’re realy excited.”

Dayton girls go 1-4

Despite going 1-4, Dayton was competitive for the most part at the Hug Jamboree. Dayton lost to North Valleys 1-0 before beating Fernley 1-0. Alaura Greenwalt scored on an assist from Karla Montano against Fernley.

Dayton went on to lose to Hug 1-0, North Tahoe 3-0 and Wooster 1-0.

Dayton boys advance to finals

The Dayton varsity boys advanced to the championship game of the Douglas JV Tournament. Dayton beat North Tahoe 3-0 after playing Tahoe to a scoreless tie in the first half. Salvador Martinez, Elisio Medina and Jacob Duran scored while Victor Gomez, Jaime Avila and Duran all had assists. Jonathan Torres and Jorddy Diaz played well defensively. Dayton then beat Douglas 5-3. Salvador Martinez scored on an outstanding assist from Duran to tie the score 1-1 at halftime. Martinez scored again on an assist from Avila to tie the score 2-2 and Avila scored on a breakway to give Dayton a 3-2 lead. With the score tied 3-3, Dayton scored twice in the last 15 minutes as Avila scored on an assist from Duran and Sanchez added an insurance goal.

In the championship, Dayton fell to Wooster 6-1.
