Senator Square: Carson High School Senator Solutions Program seeks volunteers

Carson High School’s 21st Century Learning Center grant is expanding this year to include support labs open to all students. These labs, which run Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 p.m., will include tutoring in English, math and science, as well as tutoring targeted to struggling freshmen and sophomores. This free opportunity for students to get help in completing homework, projects and studying for tests can make the difference between passing or failing a course and staying on track for graduation. Because of a tight budget, the CHS Senator Solutions program is in need of community members who are interested in tutoring students in any of these areas. We need retired engineers, scientists, teachers, or anyone with excellent writing/reading skills. We’re also interested in recruiting offices who want to do employee volunteering together, and college students looking to inspire the next generation of learners. The commitment can be as often or as little as works for your schedule, and you will always have the support of a classroom teacher. Interested volunteers will have to be fingerprinted through the school district, and then will be trained by the program coordinator. HOMECOMING

Mark your calendars now for the upcoming CHS Homecoming. Plenty of activities will be going on the week of Sept. 21 through 26. There are going to be an exciting array of events for all members of our community to attend. Stay tuned for more information but plan now to attend an open house, tailgate and football game on Sept. 25.

FBLA MEETING

The Future Business Leaders of America will be having its first meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at lunch in Mrs. Golik’s room 243. All students interested in joining this active and successful business group, please plan to attend. Cupcakes will be served to all students.

FCA MEETING

Fellowship of Christian Athletes meet weekly at lunch in Mr. McMillen’s room. Everyone is welcome. Join us for fellowship and prayer. You do not need to be an athlete to join our group.

SPEECH & DEBATE

Speech and debate begins this year with more than 30 members. Many new faces have joined returning veterans for what should undoubtedly be another successful season. The season hits the ground running with the first tournament only one month away at Damonte Ranch High School. Topics for the beginning of the year include whether adolescents ought to have the right to make autonomous medical choices, whether African Americans should be paid reparations, and if the federal government should curtail its domestic surveillance.

LIP SYNC

Sept. 14 is lip sync auditions. Get together a group of friends and collection of songs and bring them to the upstairs cafeteria after school starting at 2:15 p.m.

JUDICIAL BOARD

Judicial Board’s first meeting of the year will be in room 246, Ms. Cadwell’s on Thursday, Sept. 3 during lunch. Come get involved with school elections and other school issues. We welcome students from all grades to represent on Judicial Board. Our first meeting will be to set up elections for Homecoming. Get involved.

CC LIBRARY INTERNSHIP

Are you interested in earning some extra money after school? The Carson City Library is now accepting student applications for a paid internship with the Digitorium. If you are at least 15 years old and available after school from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and love working with people, this is the job for you. Fliers are posted throughout the school, or get more information from Allen Gosselin in the CHS Career Center, room 104.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Congratulations to Tommy Gall who’s the new Student Body School Board representative. This means a senior class representative position is now open. Applications for this position will be accepted until Tuesday. See Mrs. Britt in the leadership room to pick one up.
