The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those who participated in last weekend’s HopeFest at Carson Tahoe Hospital, a fundraiser which provides needed resources locally in the fight to beat cancer. Carson Tahoe Health should also be commended for entering into a partnership with world-renown Huntsman Cancer Institute, which the hospital announced last week. The partnership will definitely added in Carson-Tahoe Health’s ability to battle cancer in our area.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the recently completed Jazz & Beyond Festival. Carson City has now become a jazz haven for more than two weeks every year in August. But as the name of the event suggests, it’s not just jazz as various styles of music were presented during the festival. We also recognize all of the numerous musicians who performed during the festival.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the United States Air Force Thunderbirds for providing their exciting show during the Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. And to all those responsible for bringing one of the nation’s elite air teams to the area.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all of us, especially those who maintain our resources, for Carson City being named as the 27th best “natural haven” in the 48 states of the continental United States. Out of 3,111 counties, Carson City was rated 27th by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in its “natural amenities index.”

SILVER DOLLAR: To Bruce Vidmar, Ryan Green and Ryan Bauman for being inducted into the Carson High Football Hall of Fame last weekend.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the NVEnergy Foundation for presenting a $25,000 grant to Western Nevada College’s Applied Industrial Technology program.
