Lighting up. The Corbett Brothers of the Corbett House have done the town and their country a good service by causing to be erected in front of their hotel a large and handsome lantern to give light to the benighted citizen and the weary legislator. They have our thanks.

130 years ago

Two train loads of people will go up to Virginia City this evening to hear Emma Nevada sing at Piper’s Opera House. In all, more than 300 people from Reno and Carson will attend the concert. It will be the biggest jam since John McCullough’s benefit years ago, when a thousand people were turned away form the doors (continued tomorrow).

100 years ago

Home tomorrow. The Governor’s Office is in receipt of a telegram from Gov. Boyle at San Francisco, where he has been for a week closing up the details for disposing of the Nevada buildings at the exposition, that he will be home tomorrow evening.

70 years ago

The Nevada magazine, published at Gardnerville by Clarence Crossley, is to have a new home. Work has begun on a building 45 by 50 feet. Complete printing equipment will be installed to handle magazine and book work. Crossley came to Nevada from Sacramento two years ago to work for the Daily Appeal, later going to Gardnerville where he founded the magazine.

Governor candidate Paul Laxalt said today he would oppose any attempt by the John Birch Society to take over the Republican party apparatus in Nevada.

Death Row inmate Carroll Edward Cole, facing execution early Friday, says he now realizes “this is it” but still won’t file any court petitions to stop his lethal injection.
