Laverne Janet DeValentine Hembree Labate, 80, of Carson City, passed away at her home on Friday, November 27, 2015 after a two year battle with cancer. Laverne was born in Marysville, CA to Rudy and Eda Crespan DeValentine on May 24, 1935. Her journey through life started as a child in Rio Oso/Nicholas, CA, growing up on the family farm and attending school in the area. After graduation from East Nicholas High School, she moved to Sacramento for her first job at the Sacramento bee. Laverne married Roland Hembree and moved to Yuba City, CA and started a family. She worked for the Marysville School District, and the family moved to Carson City in 1971. She worked in the family general contracting business and for the State of Nevada before retiring in 1999. During her employment at the State of Nevada, she met and married Lorry Labate and together they enjoyed traveling, golfing, gardening, and entertaining their family and friends. She had a love for shopping, reading books, Pilates, movies, and plays. She always looked forward to lunches with her closest friends. She is survived by her children, Gary (Charlene) Hembree, Gayle (Bill) Rankin, both of Carson City, grandchildren Cory Hembree, Jennifer (Matt) McVey, Michael (Tiffany) Rankin, and Jamie Rankin. Step daughters, Laurie (Lee) Van Epps, and Laurie Labate (John Bradley), step grandchildren, Jessica (Allen) Larsen, John (Lindsay) Labate, Michelle Van Epps, Jeffrey Van Epps, Patrick Van Epps, Maddison & Luke Labate, and many great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Rudy and Eda Crespan DeValentine, brother Rudy, Jr.
DeValentine, Roland Hembree, stepson Mark Labate, and Lorry Labate. In keeping with Laverne’s wishes, no service is planned. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donate to your local hospice or cancer resource center.
