DAYTON — Lovelock got hot from the foul line in the third quarter to wipe out a halftime deficit and beat Dayton, 51-41, Tuesday night in the varsity boys opener for both schools.

Dayton led 25-22 at the half, but Lovelock went 7-for-7 from the line and added four free throws to take a 37-33 lead after three. Dayton was outscored 14-8 in the final period.

“They hit a couple of shots at the start of the second half, and we were playing catch-up after that,” Dayton assistant coach Kevin Ply said.

J.J. Ply led Dayton with 11 points and Josh Rider added 10. Trevor Burrows chipped in eight.

Dayton meets Incline Thursday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the three-day Truckee Tournament.

Tigers win thriller

MINDEN — Michael Johnson, Jace Hart and Tre Jackson combined to score 45 points Tuesday night to help Douglas open its season with a 65-63 Northern Division I crossover win against North Valleys.

Hart scored on a putback to break a 55-all tie with 3:55 left to play to give Douglas (1-0) a lead it never relinquished. Tanner Williams converted a pair of free throws, then Jackson fed Johnson for a layup that extended the lead to 61-55.

The Tigers held on the rest of the way, as Williams sank two more free throws to make it 65-60 with 8.9 seconds showing on the clock.

Josh Mea and Jalen Meadors each knocked down 3-pointers in the final 12 seconds to keep North Valleys (0-1) within striking distance.

Johnson finished with 19 points, while Hart and Jackson added 13 each.

Douglas opens play on Thursday in the Wild West Shootout at Bishop Manogue.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tigers drop opener to NV

MINDEN — Passion Burrell scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter Tuesday night to put the North Valleys girls basketball team on track to a season-opening 51-38 victory against Douglas.

North Valleys (1-0) outscored Douglas 18-6 in the third quarter to stretch a 22-19 lead to 40-25. Burrell scored seven points in the final 2:11 of the period.

The game was a rematch of the 2015 region tournament quarterfinals which Douglas won 51-49 on the same court.

Freshman guard Janae Blue Horse led the Tigers with 11 points, eight of which came in the second quarter. Maddy Lowe also scored seven for Douglas.

Lovelock stops Dayton

DAYTON — The Mustangs outscored Dayton 29-13 in the second half to break open a two-point game at the half (24-22) and come away with a 53-35 nonleague win Tuesday night in the season-opener for both schools.

“We had a great first half tonight, but or girls ran out of gas,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Our girls looked good the first two quarters, but couldn’t keep up the pace. This is a team we lost to by 48 ponts last year, so the effort from my girls, and their hard work in the off-season is definitely apparent.”

Angela Sikora led Dayton with 22 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Elora Neep played well in her varsity debut with 11 points and six rebounds.

Dayton travels to the Hawthorne Tournament this weekend.

Dayton girls fall

DAYTON — Lovelock opened its season with a 47-22 thumping of Dayton Tuesday night.

The Dust Devils were led by Shaine Vincent’s eight points.

Carson girls routed

The Reno Huskies rolled to a 48-17 win over Carson at Morse Burley Gym.

Camiell Simpson led Carson with six points.

Reno boys overpower CHS

RENO — Despite 11 points from Derek Barry 11, Reno knocked off Carson, 60-40, Tuesday night.

Dawson Lamb added seven for CHS and Trent Muckensturm scored five.

Falcons win opener

Brynna Hansen scored 15 points and grabbed for rebounds to lead the Sierra Lutheran girls to a 31-18 win over Silver Stage in the opener for both teams on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington stars honored

Senior Kassidy Lommori was named the Division III State Player of the Year and her coach, Debbie Rife, was named Coach of the Year recently.

Setter Ashley Rife was named first-team all-state.

Lommori was Co-Player of the Year in Northern Division III along with Incline’s Kira Porter. Rife was a first-team selection.

Yerington’s Deseree Landa and Rachel Dane were second-team picks and Jordan Bobrick was an honorable mention selection for the Lions.

Five VC girls honored

Virginia City’s Bethany Fuller, Kelsi Sequeira and Chelsea Nevin were first-team Division IV selections.

Kaitlin Hames was a second-team pick while Kim Tlapa was honorable mention.

Ally Sceirine of Smith Valley and Amy Williamson of Sage Ridge were Co-Coaches of the Year while Smith Valley’s Kellie Rogaczewski was Player of the Year.
