Prep roundup: Allen sparks CHS to season-opening win

SAN FRANCISCO — Carson High’s boys basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with a 49-40 win over Righetti-Santa Maria in the first round of the Riordan Crusader Classic.

The victory sends the Senators into the semifinals against the Archbishop Riordan-Castlemont-Oakland winner today at 8 p.m.

“For the first game, I was pretty pleased with the way we played,” CHS coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “Defensively we played well, but defense always comes around faster than offense.

“The first half we were not very patient on offense. The second half we settled down.”

Carson led 29-20 at the half. Each team scored 20 points in the second half.

Tez Allen led Carson with 14 points on 7-for-7 from the floor, while Jared Rooker and Jayden DeJoseph added 10 each. Asa Carter chipped in seven.

Carson shot 59.5 percent for the game and had 12 assists, four by Rooker, on 22 baskets. Both teams grabbed 21 rebounds with Allen leading CHS with eight.

Righetti’s Chris Hinojos scored nine and added five assists.

Douglas loses in tourney

RENO — Defending Wild West Shootout champ Jesuit handed Douglas a 62-50 defeat in the opening round of the three-day tournament.

Douglas plays North Tahoe today at 3. North Tahoe lost 72-29 to Bishop Manogue.

Bad 2nd half kills Dayton

TRUCKEE — Incline outscored Dayton 37-15 in the second half to grab a 76-51 decision in the first round of the Truckee Tournament.

Dayton, 0-2, plays the Excel Christian-Lassen loser today at 3 p.m.

“We did a good job of controlling tempo in the first half,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We got tired in the second half and started making lazy passes and turning the ball over. It was closer than the score. I subbed early in the fourth quarter.”

J.J. Ply and Tyler Peterson led the offense with 18 points apiece.

Yerington knocks off Dayton

HAWTHORNE — Dayton led at the half, but the Lions rallied for a 53-43 victory in the first round of the three-day Hawthone Tournament.

“We couldn’t hang on in the second half due to slow play and turnovers,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We saw a lot of opportunities to score, so our focus the rest of the tournament will be converting the easy baskets and staying strong through the second half.”

Angela Sikora led the Dust Devils with 18 points and Aleea McGill-Howe added nine. Kristina Mason pulled down nine rebounds.

Dayton is 0-2 and continues tournament play today.

Carson girls triumph

SPARKS — Freshman Haley Garver scored 11 points to spark the Senators to a 42-31 win over Casa Roble in the opening round of the annual High Sierra Winter Challenge at Spanish Springs.

Carson, 1-1, plays Faith Lutheran-Las Vegas today at 4:30 p.m. at Reno High School.

“Haley did a good job,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said.

“We played much better as a team today. We moved the ball and attacked the basket, and we were better on the boards.”

Bri Alvarado complemented Garver with six points.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson boys fall

The Senators fell to 0-2 after a 47-41 loss to Spanish Springs Thursday night.

Derek Berry led the offense with nine points, while Hunter Rauh added eight and Trent Robison had six.

CHS girls rally for win

SPARKS — The Senators, trailing 19-8 at the half, outscored Spanish Springs 34-11 in the second half to grab a 42-30 win at the High Sierra Winter Challenge.

Carson, 1-1, faces Reno today at 7:30 p.m. at Reno High.

Ku’ulei Haupu led Carson with 14 points and Katelyn Morse added 12.
