SAN FRANCISCO — Moises Sandoval, James Chun, Eddie Stansberry and Luis Cardenas knocked down key free throws in the final 48 seconds to give tournament host Archbishop Riordan a 43-40 win over Carson in the semifinals of the Crusader Classic Friday night.
The loss sends Carson into the third-place game against San Ramon Valley today at 6:30. Riordan will play St. Mary’s of Berkeley for the title.
Carson, which played the final 6-minutes 28-seconds without Tez Allen (fouled out) went more than three minutes without a point, and in a game where every possession counted, that was huge.
“Overall, I thought we played outstanding defense,” CHS coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “Asa (Carter) did a great job against Stansberry (9 points, all on line).
“I don’t think that drought hurt us that much. We didn’t come out ready to play. We fell behind 8-0 to start the game. We did a good job of fighting back twice. I was disappointed with some of our veterans who we expect a lot from offensively.”
The Senators got a total of eight points combined from Allen (3), Ian Schulz (4) and Jayden DeJoseph (1). Half of Carson’s points came off the bench. Kyle Krebs led the team with 11 and Jace Keema had nine.
“Kyle came in and played good defense and knocked down the shots when he was supposed to,” Mendeguia said.
Sandoval’s two free throws extended Riordan’s lead to 39-32 with two free throws with 47.1 left. Krebs knocked down a 3-pointer with 35.1 left to make it 39-35, but Chun (18 points) drained two free throws for a 41-35 lead. Cody Azevedo made it 41-37 with two free throw with 24.8 left.
Stansberry made one of two to make it 42-37. Krebs drained another 3-pointer to make it a one possession game, 42-40. Carson fouled Cardenas, who made one to make it 43-40 with 1 second left.
Asa Carter heaved one up from half court that was about three feet short of the basket.
Carson put together an 8-2 run, tying the game at 30. Keema, Carter, Schulz and Jared Rooker had baskets. Riordan scored the next seven to make it 37-30 with 1:14 remaining.
Chun had a big trey from the left corner to key the run.
Dayton tops Excel
TRUCKEE — Dayton grabbed its first win of the season, knocking off Excel Christian, 51-40, in a consolation game at the Truckee Tournament.
The Dust Devils, 1-2, play today at 1 for fifth place.
Josh Rider led Dayton with 11 points and Tyler Peterson added 10. J.J. Ply finished with eight.
“We didn’t have a lot of energy,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We played just OK.”
Douglas smothers N.Tahoe
RENO — The Tigers evened their record at the 12th annual Wild West Shootout at Bishop Manogue with a 67-34 win over North Tahoe Friday afternoon.
Michael Johnson led the offense with 10 points, nine coming on three 3-point field goals. Dalton Davis added nine and Jordan Warren eight, as the Tigers subbed liberally throughout.
VC loses first 4
HAWTHORNE — Virginia City is 0-4 on the young season after dropping two more games on Friday.
VC opened its season on Thursday with losses to Battle Mountain (49-16) and Pahrump (50-47) at the Hawthorne Tournament.
Brandon Miller scored four in the opener and then added 15 in Pahrump game.
On Friday, VC lost 60-52 to White Pine and then lost 69-43 to Bishop.
Colt Hess and Tanner Eken scored 10 each against White Pine. Eken scored 10 against Bishop.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Dayton splits at tournament
HAWTHORNE — The Dust Devils split their two games on Friday at the Hawthorne Tournament, knocking off Virginia City, 41-18, and losing to Battle Mountain, 72-46.
The split gives Dayton a 1-3 record.
“We’re doing a much better job defensively,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Everybody is getting a piece of the action. We’re taking advantage of our open looks and moving the ball well. We know we have to improve at the defensive end.”
Dayton led 17-7 at the half against VC, and outcored the Muckers 24-11 in the final 16 minutes. Angela Sikora led the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Elora Neep added five points and 12 rebounds, and Abby Sikora added six points and five rebounds.
In the loss to Battle Mountain, Angela Sikora had 23 points, including five 3-point field goals, and eight boards, while Neep and Aleea McGill-Howe added seven points. Neep also had seven rebounds.
DHS dropped by F. Lutheran
RENO — Faith Lutheran jumped out to a seven-point lead after one quarter and coasted to a 56-27 win over the Tigers on Thursday.
Falcons drop opener
AUBURN — Forest Lake Christian knocked off Sierra Lutheran, 31-21, Friday night.
Elaina Marchegger led the Falcons with nine and Brynna Hansen added eight.
JV BASKETBALL
Carson boys fall to DHS
Despite 16 points from Wyatt Rooker, Carson dropped a 57-53 decision to Douglas Friday night.
Trent Robison added 12 and Dawson Lamb nine.
Reno tops CHS
RENO — Abby Paulson and Ku’ulei Haupu scored seven points each to lead the Senators in a 44-28 loss to the Huskies in the High Sierra Winter Challenge.
Carson, 1-2, plays Lassen today at 11:30 a.m.
