Another frustrating night for CHS girls

It was a game for about six minutes.

After that it was all downhill for the Carson High girls basketball team.

Reed outscored Carson 24-5 over the last 10 minutes of the first half en route to an easy 61-22 Division I crossover victory Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson dropped to 1-4 on the season, including 0-2 in league. Reed evened its record at 1-1.

Turnovers and a low shooting percentage have been common themes early on for the Senators, and on Tuesday that trend continued. Carson turned the ball over a whopping 58 times, leading to 40 Reed points. Carson also shot just 7-for-30 from the field (23.3 percent).

Unfortunately, first-year head coach Melissa Larsen is starting to sound like a broken record after games.

“It’s turnovers; not taking care of the ball,” Larsen said. “And, we’re not playing as a team. We’re not moving to the ball and we’re getting trapped. If we’re being trapped, somebody has to be open and we’re not seeing that. We work on it in practice all the time.”

Some of the mistakes are fundamental. Dribbling with the head down which means you aren’t seeing the double-team coming. Dribbling into a corner instead of keeping the ball in the middle of the floor, It’s easier to trap in the corner because teams use the sideline as an extra defender. Another issue is failing to block out. Carson gives up double-digit offensive rebounds.

Against a normal Reed team this could have been a lot uglier than it was. This is a young Reed team with just three returning players, according to Reed coach Sara Schopper-Ramirez.

“This is only our second game,” she said. “We’re in a little bit of varsity shock. Once the defense got into a rhythm, we started playing better. We made some young mistakes, but we were able to play through them.”

Both teams had trouble scoring in the first quarter. It took Carson 5-minutes and 50-seconds to score its first and only points of the quarter. Reed scored a bucket inside the first minute and then manged just five free throws the rest of the way to lead 7-2 after one.

The mistakes caught up to Carson in the second quarter, however. The Senators turned the ball over 13 times in the second quarter, and Reed scored six times, including two treys by Taylor Johnson (26 points), enroute to a 20-point quarter and a 27-7 lead at the half. Carson’s only basket of the quarter was a lay-up by Lulu Street with 2:23 left in the half.

The third quarter was another slow one for both teams. Reed outscored Carson 9-7 to lead 36-19 after three.

Johnson, who was scoreless in the third quarter, scored 15 in the final period. Carson didn’t do a good job of closing out on her in the corner despite Larsen telling her defenders to get out to both Johnson and Vanessa Hernandez (13 points).

“I thought we did a better job offensively in the second half,” Larsen said.

“I thought we were more aggressive.

“They are a good team, and we got frustrated. We kept getting frustrated. Little things are killing us. We have to and will keep working on them. Like I said, it’s going to be a work in progress.”

Lindy Lehman led CHS with five points, while Street and Ivy Pembrook added four each.

Carson is off until next Friday and Saturday when it visits Hug (5:15 on Friday) and Spanish Springs (11:45 on Saturday.”

JV WRESTLING

Six place at Hug

RENO — Carson High placed six wrestlers at Saturday’s Hug Takedown.

Austin Rudy (160) went 6-0 to win his weight group. John Rupert (152), Jesse Case (170), Ty Evans (160), Isaiah Prater (heavyweight) all finished second. Mark Trost (138) was third. Jake Roman went 3-1 at 145 and Daryll Heyward went 3-2 at 145.

JV BASKETBALL

Reed 36, Carson 11

Carson continues to struggle at the offensive end, as the Raiders rolled to an easy win.

Katelyn Morse led Carson with five points.

Carson 60, Reed 55

SPARKS — Derek Berry poured in 17 points and Dawson Lamb added 13 to lead the CHS boys to a narrow win.

Carson, 2-3 overall, got nine points each from Jonny Randall and Kyle Glanzmann.

S. Lutheran edges IHS

Aleyna Gibson scored six points to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 20-18 win over Incline Village.
