Community spotlight: Local runners compete in Calif. marathon

Seven Carson City residents were greeted by a cold rain on Sunday morning at the beginning of the California International Marathon in Sacramento.

Joe Thornburg finished second out of 76 in the Clydesdale Division, clocking a time of 3-hours 3-minutes and 13 seconds for the 26.2 mile event. Nicole Kastens was the second-fastest local runner, clocking a 3:30 en route to finishing 56th in the 35-39 age group.

Parker Lehmann, 12, running in his first marathon, clocked a 3:44.15 to finish 10th in the 19-and-under group.

“The cold rain led to a lot of leg camps for a lot of runners,” said Sean Lehmann, Parker’s father. “Parker was right on pace at the half-marathon mark, coming in at 1:37.29. Cramps really kicked in at the 16-mile mark, He finished ahead of 70 percent of the runners.”

Kyndra Holloway, who has run track and cross country at Carson, competed as part of her senior project. She was 16th in the 19 and under division for women, clocking at 5:12.56. Her mom, Rhonda, ran a 4:08.06. Another family, Wyatt and Rick Cartier, also competed. Wyatt Cartier finished two spots behind Lehmann with a time of 3:46.58, and Rick Cartier, running in the 50-54 division, ran a 4:37.56.

Six gymnasts qualify

for optional level

Emily Lewis, Bella Planeta, Eliana Hollar, Eviana McGowan, Nicole Hawkins and Jessica Stine scord well enough to move on to the optional leval at last weekend’s meet in Reno.

In the Level 3 (9-10 division), Danica Studley won first place on vault, bars, and floor to win the first place all-around (AA) medal. Brook Grundy tied for first place on bars and placed third on floor. In Level 3 (10 and over), Chloe Byrne was second on vault and won third place AA.

In Level 4 (8-year-olds), Alexis Gardner won first on vault and bars, third on beam, and third AA.

At Level 6 (8-10 age group), Elle Liebendorfer won first place on vault, second on bars, beam, and floor to capture the first place AA medal.

At Level 5 (10-year-old group), Lewis placed second on bars and finished third place AA. Planeta was first place on beam and third on floor. In the 11-year-old group, Eliana Hollar placed second on bars and third on beam.

Area hockey team

looking for help

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies, a Pee-Wee hockey team with players from South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Incline Village, Reno, Carson City and Minden, won the 2015 Pacific District Regional title recently to qualify for the finals in Ontario, Canada.

The tournament is from Jan. 7-11, and the local group is looking for financial help to pay registration expenses and help defray the costs for the players and coaches. Thus far, the team has raised $605, and is looking to raise $10,000.

Local soccer squad

wins in Modesto

The Carson FC Wolfpack U-17 girls won the Modesto Ajax College Showcase over the weekend with a 3-0-1 record. The team didn’t give up a goal in the tournament.

In the opener, the Wolfpack beat Fair Oaks Elite 99, 2-0, on goals from Hannah Mora and Rachel Henley. Megan Sando had an assist on the first score. After a scoreless tie against NorCal Elite U-19, the locals beat Cap United FC U-18 3-0 on goals from Alondra Mata, Henley and Lauren Hudak. Sando and Hudak also registered assists. In the finals, the Wolfpack edged Modesto Ajax 1-0 on a 35-yard free kick by Valerie Sue Meyer.

Bri Wood, Jordyn Howell, Jillian Jacobsen, Kassidy Ward and Ramneek Dhami played well in the midfield, and the back row defense of Dani Dowling, Meyer, Selin Lizaragga and Galilea Cid was stellar. Gabby Knickel was tremendous in goal.

Carson High bowlers

dominate Galena, 31-14

Twelve bowlers registered series’ of 500 or better to lead Carson past Galena, 31-14, last week.

Dustin Floyd led the way with a 249-698 (high game first and series), and he was followed by Matt Hinton 231-613, Conlin Herrick 209-596, Connor Bell 202-556, Chris Baird 212-554, Ray Ceragoli 211-553, Skylar Belcer 224-548, Tyler Lethcoe 186-547, Samantha Hinton 233-543, Matt Liddell 199-505, Alec Fletcher 197-527, and Chesney Minor 186-526.

Carson faces Reed today at 3:30 at Grand Sierra Resort.

CHS Poker Night

to benefit baseball

The 8th annual Poker Night to benefit Carson High baseball in the spring and summer is set for January 30 at Fuji Park from 5 to 10 p.m.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for dinner and drinks, and poker starts at 6. There are unlimited re-buys the first two hours. The cost is $75 for dinner and poker, and $25 for dinner only.
