Nevadans around the region should expect to see some snow in the coming week, with two storm systems expected to hit Northern Nevada.

The first system is expected to hit the region Wednesday night into Thursday through the weekend. Scott McGuire, a meteorologist with the Reno National Weather Service said they have a high confidence that there will be a weather event. He said residents can expect to see winds up to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph in Carson City and Reno, and winds up to 80 mph in Washoe Valley along I-580 and Highway 395. McGuire said residents should secure all outdoor items with the high winds, including holiday decorations.

Snow is expected with the first system, with the Sierra expecting a winter weather warning from 4 a.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday, with up to two feet expected on the Sierra Crest. Lake Tahoe also will see a possible 7- to 14-inches at lake level. McGuire said people can expect significant travel delays.

The Carson City, Reno area can expect to see up to one-inch of rain that will transfer to snow. Depending on how quickly the cold air comes into the region, people can expect to see at least two inches, though McGuire said it will not be a significant amount.

The second storm, which is expected to come in Sunday afternoon into Monday, is expected to be colder. The cold will bring increased snow potential to Western Nevada.

The snow and wind impacts are expected to have significant impacts for travel and commutes, McGuire said.
