Senator Square: Carson High School bowling team off to strong start

The Carson High School bowling team won its first match last week against Galena, 33-12. The highest game and series for our boys team was rolled by Dustin Floyd with a 247 game and 693 series. Samantha Hinton had the highest game and series for our girls with a 233 game and 543 series. Excellent start to the CHS bowling season.

SPEECH/DEBATE NEWS

Carson High debaters competed in the annual American Legion Oratorical Competition last weekend. The competition has two rounds; the first requires students to present an 8- to 10-minute speech on the duties and obligations of a citizen as outlined by the Constitution. The second round has students present a 3- to 5-minute speech on a specific part of the Constitution that’s drawn at the event. Alek Henricksen placed third, Alessandro Figueroa placed second, and Sawyer Barnett placed first. Sawyer advances to the next round of the competition which will be held in January.

BAND NEWS

The Instrumental Department proudly presents: “Do You Hear What I Hear?” annual Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Community Center. Come and hear our award winning band and orchestra perform selections such as: Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto,” “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” “Holiday Celebration,” to name a few. Speaking of award winning; the bands had 28 students named to the zone honor band with six of them named to first chair. PTSA NEWS

National PTA Reelections contest is here. This year’s theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Categories are: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. Deadline is Jan 13. Entry forms are available in the library or from Mrs. Tims, Room 235. This is a great opportunity to show off your talent and win up to $50 per category.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s Senior in the Spotlight is Fritz Steinle. Aside from being a committed and high achieving student taking numerous AP and Honors classes, Fritz is an avid outdoorsman; he’s a certified Leave No Trace Trainer, is Wilderness First Aid certified, has completed two courses through the National Outdoor Leadership School, and is currently a telemark ski coach at Alpine Meadows.

Fritz has been an important member of the Carson High School Culinary team for the last three years, and caters often throughout the community at events as a Culinary III student. During his sophomore year of high school, his team came in fourth place at the State ProStart competition in hot foods. He has also been part of our school’s band and ski team during his high school career.

After graduation, Fritz plans to attend The Evergreen State College, a progressive public liberal arts and sciences college in Olympia, Wash. He would like to major in both Computer Science and Literature. Carson High School appreciates the positive attitude, enthusiasm, and energy Fritz brings to our school every day, and we wish him luck in his future endeavors. You will be missed at CHS, Fritz!
