Prep roundup: Nationally ranked Moreau handles Tigers

MINDEN — Five players scored in double figures to help nationally ranked Moreau Catholic (Hayward, Calif.) run to an 83-61 victory against Douglas Saturday afternoon at Randy Green Court.

Moreau (3-0) surged to a 24-10 first quarter lead and went on to complete its sweep of a two-game series in Northern Nevada. The Mariners were ranked No. 11 by USA Today this week.

Michael Johnson and Dalton Davis scored 10 points each, while Dylan Hinks added nine and Jace Hart eight to provide offensive highlights for Douglas (3-3 overall, 2-0 league). Tanner Williams also dished out seven assists.

Oscar Frayer, a 6-foot-6 forward, led all scorers with 18 points, including a pair of slam dunks, to lead a balanced attack for the Mariners. Terrell Brown and Damari Millstead scored 17 each, Jullen Ison 13 and Alex Johnson 10.

Frayer gave a verbal commitment to play for Cal earlier this year and then de-committed in November. Brown has given a verbal commitment to San Jose State and Brandon Lawrence to American University (changing an earlier decision to go with Fresno State). Ison, a junior, attracted considerable attention during the just concluded football season when he rushed for 3,044 yards and scored 43 touchdowns.

Muckers go 3-1 in tourney

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City posted a 3-1 record this week at its own Comstock Classic.

The Muckers opened on Thursday with a 46-40 win over Round Mountain thanks to 22 points from Brandon Miller and nine by Hugh Fonzo. On Friday, VC split two, beating Mammoth, 60-31, on the strength of 10 points from Thomas Redican and nine from Fonzo. Colt Hess had 20 in the next game, but Battle Mountain pevailed, 59-40. Tristan Steele and Tanner Uken had eight each. On Saturday, VC stopped Tonopah, 50-33, thanks to 16 from Hess and 11 by Steele.

North Valleys rips Dayton

ZEPHYR COVE — The Panthers outscored the Dust Devils in the first three quarters en route to a 70-45 win at the Whittell Tournament.

Jalen Meadors led NV with 17 points, while A.J. Dennis added 13. No information was reported by Dayton.

JV WRESTLING

Six wrestlers place

RENO — The Carson JV wrestling team had a strong outing at McQueen, placing six out of 11 entrants.

Austin Rudy (160) won his weight class with a 3-0 record, Jesse Case (170) went 4-0 to claim a title, John Rowe (182) went 3-0 with three pins and Sam Haight (220) went 4-0 at 220 pounds,

Mark Trost (132) went 3-2 with two pins and took fourth place and John Rupert (152) went 3-1 with three pins and took second place.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fallon remains unbeaten

MINDEN — Caitlyn Welch, Leilani Otuafi and Megan McCormick helped spark a 20-10 run over the final six minutes to boost undefeated Fallon to a 65-54 non-league win against Douglas.

Fallon (6-0 overall) trailed by four points midway through the third quarter and still only led by one point early in the fourth before taking charge. Welch, Otuafi and McCormick combined to score 14 points and dish out four assists during the Greenwave’s game-ending run. McCormick finished with 21 points, while Otuafi added 13 and Welch 12.

Maddy Lowe led all scorers with 25 points for Douglas (1-5 overall, 0-2 league). Lowe’s 3-pointer from the top of the key brought the Tigers to within 45-44 with 6:06 left to play.

Freshman Hannah Carr also scored 12 points for Douglas, seven of which came in the first quarter.

Fallon led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter, only to see Douglas rally back to within 26-24 at halftime.

Dayton splits at Whittell

ZEPHYR COVE — Dayton split its two tournment games at Whittell on Saturday, beating White Pine 36-32 and losing 57-49 to West Wendover.

Against White Pine, Dayton led 17-13 at the half, and was able to hold on, as Aleea McGill-Howe hit a key basket down the stretch. Angela Sikora had 25 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, and McGill-Howe had five points and three rebounds.

Missed shots and turnovers hampered Dayton against West Wendover. Angela Sikora had 20 points and six rebounds, Elora Neep nine and eight rebounds, and Abby Sikora eight points and five rebounds. Kristina Mason also pulled down five rebounds.

“It was good to keep up with a team like West Wendover,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “They already have eight wins this season. I believe we were able to come out of this tournament understanding our weaknesses, and we leave with better knowledge of the things we can improve on. I was proud we picked up a couple of wins this weekend.”
